Tom and Ron, I'm sure you have seen the discussion over on the NYC Board about what might have been had steam continued to develop on the NYC. I don't know if either of you took a look at David Stephenson's site and his drawing of his idea of a New York Central 4-6-6-4, based on the Niagara and the UP Challenger. I just HAVE to post this design he came up with. Knowing how the NYC engineering staff (Mech, not Operations) worked, this is definitely not beyond belief. The Central would not have called it a Challenger, however, how about "St. Lawrence" class? What would the numbers be? 6500?
Fitz, May I be the first to compliment NYC on that even though it is a Challenger, St Laurence fits the bill! Nice structual picture!
Jim Lets see now, start out with an N&W Y6b chassis add a little length for the four wheel pilot truck and splice a couple of Niagara boilers and we have a model!!! Where is that drawing from? That is a great looking loco.I know I have seen that before but can't place it. Ron
Dave Stephenson did a great job with this! You could call it a "Century" type or an "Empire" type!!? Since it would have been freight only, it might have had a number series of 3200, following the 3100 series L-4B's. At the time it would have been built, the 3200 number series was occupied by Baby Face baldwins, I think. (No loss....)
If anyone is interested, Dave sent me his latest version with roller bearing rods and smoke lifters. I haven't moved it over to the ISP yet, but will if you want to see it. Looks cool. I may edit it and try to put no. 3201 on it.
