This has posted on another topic but got me thinking (thought I smelled something).
Can you all post your layout square footage and how many locos and then rolling stock per square foot you have?
I am betting we all have more trains than layout (DUH!).
Number of locos or cars divided by square feet.
    Layout 160 SQFT
    locos 20
    rolling stock 105

LOCOS = .125 per sq ft
Cars = .656 per sq ft

My point is I try to keep what I need to be able to run on the layout and not have to many to store or collect dust.
JUST FOR FUN , What are your stats?

    OK,
So math was never my strong suit. But I don't have to be a mathamatsion(no,spelling doesn't count either :D ) to know I have to many trains. Even with my full display case. I have more trains than layout. Mind you, I have a good sized layout, but I need more, more I tell you, more [IMG] [IMG] .

My finished layout is 8 square feet, but the one under construction is 80 square feet, which is misleading as it consists of 40 feet of 18 inch wide shelves and 20 feet of 12 inch wide shelves.

I have 35 locomotives, 32 finished, and a little over 300 freight cars. One locomotive and four cars are British outline, and seven cars are modern cars representing former employers, not to be operated.

The JJJ&E is about 100 square feet. It is also mutileveled which increases the square footage.

I have over 500 freight cars and about 150 loco's most of which are steamers.

Stay cool and run steam..... [IMG]

For me, the math is easy, the counting is the hard part. What to include, what to leave out. [IMG]

I have some really old stuff hanging around from the dark days, some kits not yet assembled, a few good cars that are far enough out of my era that even I won't run them, some cars in various stages of 'bashing', and some on the RIP track for various problems. Similar situation with my locos. Hard to say which should really be included in a count.

The layout is 20 sq ft (hcwd). Let's call it around 100 cars (+/-) and 15 locos (+/-).

    That gives us:
    5 cars/sq ft
    0.75 locos/sq ft

This year will see only a few more cars added (but maybe some of those kits finished and bashes completed). But there could be a couple new engines in my future. :D

    Regards

    Ed

    I've got;

    15" x 186" =2790 sq. in.

    2790/144 = 19.375 sq. ft.

    1 loco ( 0-6-0) so = 1loco/19.375 sq. ft.
    22 rolling stock so = 1 car/.880 sq. ft.
