I posted this question on railforum also and have not gotten a response yet.

    In regards to this picture:

What is the instrument on the windshield right above the horn lever? I've noticed this thing on almost every new loco and have not been able to find out what it is.

    Thanks,

    Ben

I believe Hank may be correct. Some companies are retro-fitting. And others are having them installed at the factory on new units. Believe UP and BNSF are amongst those doing it.

    Hope someone can confirm.

    BTW- Welcome to TrainBoard!

Dashcam. Once I noticed that it was an NS unit (by channel on radio and then the caption), I knew that was a camera. CSX cameras are mounted on left side of right windshield. NS had some mounted there also.

Do Dashcams record only the last 30(+/-) minutes in a loop like aircraft Black Boxes, or do they record everything continuously until turned off?

It is a Dash Cam. Railroads are finding out it is cheaper to install these in locomotives and have good evidence in court when idiots that get hit by trains sue.

Not sure but I believe 48 hour loop. They come on when movement commences and shut off after 5 minutes when stopped. Microphone under cab floor records bell, horn and air brake system sounds. I've been told you can clearly hear moment of impact in an accident.
