What is this ? From The Fallen Flags website: JTTX FM 912050 - Pocatello ID - Oct/86 w/ N&W container - {Dave Krumenacker Photo} Anyone know what this car was used for ?
Oh great, another car Micro-Trains will release before doing more yellow TTX. Seriously, that's an interesting looking car. Maybe a "gon-rack"? Actually I would probably say it was for hauling rail if I were to venture a guess.
I found this through Google: Nobody's playing photoshop. That car is real, and I found another picture. It's a photocopy from a magazine dated January 1967. The only hint at which magazine is M.RR. Someone gave me the photocopy years ago, so I can only guess that means Model Railroader, although Trains is a more likely candidate. The car number is 912050. The reporting marks in my photocopy are TTX, though they appear to be JTTX in the posted picture. It is described as a 90 foot gondola "used to move aircraft parts from Alcoa's Lafayette, IN, Works to Boeing in Seattle, over N&W, UP, and Pacific Coast RR." The car has a cover in the photocopy, which is not present in the color photo. It is an F89PH or F89FH class flat car, built in either 1965 or 1966, based on what data I can make out. It appears to be the same paint scheme, minus the ACI label and wheel dot.
Yah, the car is a heavy duty flat car with an N&W container attached to it. When the photo was taken the car likely was being used in the aircraft parts service mentioned, but the container could be added or removed as needed, without affecting the car's use, much like the TTX flats that carry autoracks.
A Google search I did also threw up this piece of info: - "Commodity: Extruded aluminum for Boeing wing spars" Same search result also gave the Build Date as January '65
