I also voted other. Didn't realize that this was a vote on fallen flags. But, in that case - the Seaboard Air Line. Won't go into the color schemes they used - those guys knew how to railroad, and it showed. Also, a notable lack of management/labor angst.
Not me..........I have few memories of the Q, and never saw GN or NP in action, but I can tell you I wouldn't shed one tear if BN were to "devolve" back into those roads (along with SP&S). If anything, the Midwest just ain't the same without the Burlington. That, and my Mom was born in a CB&Q town (Wymore, NE) not far from the yard & shops.
Nor would I mind if we could roll back to about 1968. Not just to see REAL railroading practiced again. Also, as the economic damage in my state, as fallout from that merger, is still ongoing. Boxcab E50
I vote for all the railroads of the 50's and 60's in the southeast. As I was born in 74 and missed quite a bit. I would really like to see the r.r.'s that where in ATL in the prime.
Even though I am a life long Southern Pacific fan, I voted "other" because my favorite of favorites, The Western Pacific didn't make the list. Tom in Tacoma
I voted OTHER for the Texas & Pacific and the Southern Pacific. I got to ride on the Super Chief from Texas to California a couple of times which memories will never fade!
I would have LOVED to ride the original '55-57 Empire Builder, as well as the North Coast Limited. The Olympian Hiawatha would be next on the list, behind Little Joes. Also in the top 5 is the original California Zephyr. The Amtrak route misses Feather River canyon, and I would love to ride thru there someday. I'd love to be a railfan in the 50's....
My ultimate ride would be from Tacoma, Wa. on the Milwaukee Road on the 1955 Hiawatha with the Super dome seating to Chicago, then back to Seattle on the Empire Builder!!
I'd take the same trip east. But would be returning on the Vista Dome North Coast Limited! Boxcab E50
Hey, I can't believe I'm the only one(or the 1st) to say Erie Lackawanna. The named Passenger trains & big frieghts like NY 99/100.
Mike- Remember last year? When I was looking for info on that E-L interlocking tower? It really surprised me there weren't more people and resources I could find on the 'Net. For Erie, DL&W, or E-L. There must be more fans out there! Boxcab E50
