Coming back into railroading after a nine year hiatus. Sorry to make my first post a question, but what are you using for water? I can remember a post talking about using something from Home Depot, but no amount of searching has been able to uncover it. I'm leaning toward Envio-Tex from Michael's but I'm open to suggestions. The river is just about ready for a pour, so I'm close to making a commitment. Overall, having a blast digging the old N stuff out of the attic and building a layout. I followed the stated advice heard many times on this board and went with Unitrak - sending lots of time painting it - one tie at a time. Thanks for any suggestions. Don
Don, You might want to try this product a saw it at trainfest earlier this month and it looked real nice. http://www.unrealdetails.com/
Don: Welcome to Trainboard...... The original post was in the N scale forum on August 9th by Fotheringill. You can use Famowood which you can get at Home Depot, WS water o Envirotek which are obtained at your LHS. Stay cool and run steam...... Here is the thread. More than you ever wanted to know. All will work, but I think the Famowood is the most available and works well. I used Envirotex, but I would try the Famowood next time. http://www.trainboard.com/ultimatebb.php/ubb/get_topic/f/9/t/006487.html#000000 More advice? Plan ahead!
I've used the Castin'Craft clear casting resin which is available from most large craft store such as Hobby Crafts and generally cheaper than some of the LHS. Disadvantage is odor while curing and curetime depending on thickness. Does allow for pouring in layers though when setting stuff in the water.
I like casting resin best because it leaves a realistic surface and when poured thick like 1/2", it reflects layout lighting nicely in a dark room. It can eat poly foam insulation board so I line the bed up with plaster of paris. Like John Moore says, it has a strong odor. Simialr to fiberglass resin.
don the magic water that wiking pointed out is amazing we did a show in springfield il. and tried it out with awesome results. no heat buildup like e-tex and more workable than the ws water, plus less mess.
I used with my two projects glossy lacquer from building supply store. You see it at my Trestle and with my current another Trestle module Wolfgang
Al ittle help here please guys. I did a search on Home Depot's website for famowood and came up empty. Did I get the spelling right? famowood?
Spelling is correct; all one word. Famowood is a line of products for wood working. I couldn't find it at Lowe's or Home Depot. It should be at a hardware store or craft store, like Michael's. I would call around locally or order on the internet. [ November 27, 2005, 02:34 PM: Message edited by: sapacif ]
I found that Famowood is more expensive than Envirotex. I like Envirotex, probably because I've used a lot of it in my harbor, and never had a problem.
Thanks for all the replies. The thread that was linked is the one I was thinking about. Coupon in the paper today for 40% off at Michael's sealed the deal. I want to put some more grass and weeds around the banks and then pour. Hopefully it will come out good enough to post a picture. Thanks for the help. Don
That is a deal! It is expensive enough in N scale. My HO club is talking about gallons on a pour that will be about 3/8 inches thick. That could really get expensive.
