I am looking for information on these small 0-6-0 locomotives that both Northern Pacific and SP&S used. The Northern Pacific classed them as L-9s. The SP&S called them A-1s. They were, as I understand it, equivalent. I have found this drawing of the L-9... Steam Locomotive Diagrams - Class L-9 Diagram 1913 I have one photo in the book Oregon-American Lumber Co.: Ain't no More of the SP&S no. 5, which was leased for a time to make up for a shortage of motive power by the Oregon-American. I see that a back-issue from the SP&SHS has an article on 0-6-0s, which I hope will cover the A-1 class, and I will be ordering that. Thanks in advance for your help, Adam
I have NP books on the subject, as i purchase every NP book I see. I want to build some in Z Scale, and there are some brass castings made that Kim Vellore has, but the project is not finished. I have collected 62 web photos over the years, some from people selling them on ebay, others from peoples web sites, etc. If I see it, I use snagit to capture a copy for my collection, so I can examine it offline when I finally model them. I also have pictures of I class, I2 Class, and L through L10 class 0-6-0's, covering all NP 0-6-0's.
I am thinking of bashing SP&S No. 5 (a class A-1, equivalent to the NP class L-9 locos) in N scale. Is there a Northern Pacific book that has lots of small steamers that you would recommend?
I dont know much about the 0-6-0's as I am not much into modeling steam. But I do know where there is a NP 0-6-0 not to far from my house. It is the NP #924. But for some reason I think that is a L-5, iirc.
NP Book on Steam Adam, the book you are looking for is "NP Classic Stream Era" by Lorenz Schrenk and Robert Frey. It has a special chapter for the 1905-1925 switchers, classes L9, L10, G1 and G2, including numerous photos, diagrams, roster list, Loco data etc. In my view this is one of the best steam books ever! 0-6-0's...L9's? I wish I could add something substantial to this. I actually saw 0-6-0's at King Street station. I remember at least two of them, one usually sitting on a short spur a few yards south of King Street Station and another sitting about 100 yards beyond that one. There was also a high-hood Alco, #602 in their company and it turns out that I got a few cabs on it, thanks to old-school engineers. It abruptly came to an end when someone, probably higher up, reminded the engineer that I posed an insurance risk and he had to reluctantly tell me that I couldn't ride anymore... It was great while it lasted.
Some of those old time engine crews were quite interesting fellows. I wonder how many inspired youngsters to take up a railroading career? I, too saw some of the little 0-6-0 switchers around Puget Sound. Couldn't even make a wild guess what class. But sure remember them clanking around. Memories! Boxcab E50
Hello, N.P. 1010 L-9! Welcome to TrainBoard! I n my first post above I have a diagram of this locomotive, but it has not much detail. I have been looking for enough detail that I could eventually kitbash one of these from existing N scale models. I have since found some photos and I have gotten a book reference which I will be acting on when I eventually find a reasonably priced copy of that book. I have become fascinated by the range of Northern Pacific steam via my interest in SP&S steam.

Welcome to Trainboard! Your username is a promising sign for this thread! I drew this up for Adam a while back as a kitbashing concept. Is there anything that you think could be added/changed? After all, SP steam is my forte, not NP.

At the time I wrote the initial post, I was looking for enough to do a believable kitbash in N scale. I think Tom (A Proud SD&AE Modeler) suggested a pretty good kitbash. Keeping in mind that we're talking 1:160 scale, I think it is reasonable for what I plan on doing. In N scale one is getting the general idea of the piping but not necessarily modeling every little valve. But, I would love to know more of the history of the full size prototype. Did the GN have something similar. It seems to me that I saw a GN 0-6-0 that was similar but with a Belpaire firebox. How is the 1070? Adam
New & Improved! Well, I redrew the A-1 kitbash drawings based on the pictures of NP #1070, here's some extra notes: -bachmann parts can be scratchbuilt if needed (I understand they are out of stock) -replace cylinder block with slide valve cylinders or modify stock part/ scratchbuild. -remove valve gear (leave main & connecting rods only) -look carefully for new pipes, tanks, and grabirons. -the motor is big, ugly and sticks out the back. Hide them with cab curtains. -if you have any more questions, please ask.
That sounds like good news to me. I always worry when active steam is pulled from service and then some time passes. Boxcab E50
