Since about 80% of my collection is here: I've probably got close to 200 boxes available. The MT US/Canada sets I'm keeping the boxes to, as well as locomotives. Even then, I'm guessing better that 200 cases available. I've been wanting to get my stuff OUT of boxes and on display, where it can be seen and appreciated!! If I bring something to run at a show, I use the PPW/A-line case to transport my equipment. Plus, I don't really have the room to be saving all of the empty boxes I do have!
Someday I hope to have a setup like that when I get my train room built then I too might think about tossing out the boxes; but, then again I might still keep them for alternate storage someplace still.
Keith what a beautiful display. I got rid of most of my boxes years ago which I might regret if I even what to resell them. A lot of times when I see an item for sale, whether it's trains or HO racing cars, one of the selling points advertised is, "And in it's original case". Some of these items are even in sealed cases going back to the 60's. I wonder how these people, when they were kids, played with their trains or racing cars if they're still in sealed boxes?
Boxes in boxes in boxes So once that box is full do you buy more boxes to store your boxes in? And when you get a certain number of those boxes that are full of boxes do you get an even bigger box and put the boxes that are full of boxes in the biggest box? And then....... :tb-wink: I feel like I have started a whole new economy for used boxes. Given that, I believe it only fair I get a resonable commision. For every ten boxes you sell....I get a box!!! Actually I still have all those boxes. And if anyone still needs some boxes make me a deal. I work cheap but not free.*L*
Wow! Keith, that is some collection. To all tuned in: I believe the original question was what to I do with my boxes that the train cars or equipment comes in? Since, I seem to be the type that's on the move, more then I care to be, I keep all the plastic boxes Ie., Atlas plastic boxes. The larger boxes tend to take up to much room Ie., Athearn boxes or Bachmann. I do keep the boxes for my steamers irregardless of size and car sets Ie., Rivarossi, steamers or three car passenger sets. Requiring of course more storage space. I keep all the equipment I own in stackable, latched, HOMZ clear plastic sweater containers. Minus the sweaters...of course...grin! Each container assigned to specific and inventoried equipment. Have fun!
I use my boxes to store my stuff. This is handy because the original boxes tend to keep wheels, details, and couplers from getting screwed up or bent or knocked off. If I saw someone selling up to 5 or 10 extras in reasonably good shape at a swap meet for actual swap meet prices I would buy them for holding some of my custom made or kit built stuff.
On my last layout, every car and loco I have was on the layout. I hope to do the same with this one. So all my boxes are just in a few big rubbermaid tubs. When I moved, I didn't even put all the cars back in the original boxes, I again used rubbermaid containers with foam between the layers of cars to store the cars. As for the locos, they all go back in the original boxes.
I have way too many cars. They come off the layout and back into thier boxes. At some point I intend to make a modern building out of a bunch of them.
I put noises that I like in mine . This way when I get really old I will have something to weird out on .
I keep all my jewel boxes. Cardboard ones, overly large ones and the crappier plastic ones I don't. For train storage I use foam lined 2" deep wooden drawers mounted under the benchwork. Each drawer holds the equivalent of a 10-car passenger consist plus loco(s). If I get tired of seeing a particular train on the layout, into a drawer it goes and another can be plucked from another drawer. Ben
I'll make all you guys with extra boxes a GREAT DEAL: Put some cars and locos in 'em and I'll take 'em all. I'll even pay for shipping! Can't get more generous than that!
Speaking of boxes I _love_ the design of Fox Valley Models: The cars slide in and out easilly. No more gentle prying. I hope the rest of the industry buys thier solution.
I've got plenty of boxes, just bought another batch of them off a fellow TRAINBOARD member[THANKS!!!]. But what I would REALLY like to get my hands on are some of the PLASTIC CRADLES for KADEE/MTL jewel boxes. I'll take any extra anybody has, PM me if you want to sell any CRADLES and I'll get back to you. If I can get time to rebox a bunch of cars and such, I'll be selling some boxes on TRAINBOARD in the TRAINSTORE.
containers I do not store my cars in the shipping containers, But keep all of them. My HO cars are stored in clear plastic tubs with bublewrap between layers. My N scale stay in plastic tackle boxes from Walmart. The shipping containers are good if somebody has to sell your collections. It is easier to know what there is. One person can no longer get around and the local NMRA group is haveing trouble knowing what some of the older cars and engines are hard to tell manufacturer.
With my occassional kit bashing I usually end up with an orphaned box. Mine are used for holding all the parts from disasembling cars for painting and the parts I ocassionally cast for projects.
They're called NESTS and can be purchased separately if you want them for 60 cents. For instance, http://www.nscalesupply.com/MTL/MTL-Nest.html Ben
I have a policy: once a car or engine goes on the layout, it stays there. So I have, it seems, a zillion boxes of various types. I use 0.1 percent, picked at random, to store things, although I've lately found that paper cups take less room. When I really think about it, the empty boxes don't take all that much room. I'm more interested in emptying the remaining filled boxes. (Think about it for a moment.) Empty boxes take more space in storage than their contents take on the railroad. Think about that one for a moment, especially if you are squeezed for space. Out of time tonight.
