    Hi,

I have Digitrax Zephyr. Few months ago I was working on the tracks and I forgot to turn the power to the tracks off from the Zephyr and I think I end up burning it. I did send my Zephyr to be fixed and I have to stay with no trains for almost a month. I do not want that to happen again and I am sure at times I will forget again to turn the power to the tracks off.

So what I do I need to get to go in between my Zephyr and the tracks on the bus line to protect Zephyr.

    Thank you so much.

    Mo:)

What did you do??? Digitrax has alarmbells ringing as soon as a shortcut is detected! Did you put a metal thing on the tracks or so?

What I was doing gluing the track to the cork roadbed. I forgot to turn the power to the tracks off on Zephyr. I used super glue and then put some zip kicker. I did not hear any warning from the Zephyr. It was dead and I could smell burning from inside the unit.
Do you think that did it?

you might consider adding a fuse, you'd have to be careful on sizing, or adding a 1156 bulb as some do to keep a short from frying decoders, but not sure exactly how you'd want to do it....

I can't see how the glue did it. Is it conductive when in a liquid state? Otherwise, maybe a tool was across both rails briefly? Or just a strange coincidence?

If you use flexrail, is it possible that a piece of this track track connected the 2 rails of some other (electrified) tracks? I always forget to remove rolling stock form the layout when laying flexrail, and the flexrail always hits one of the locomotives, or cars.......

Being careful is the best remedy. Check everything, do it twice. Learn yourself to be a little neurotic: it is better to check too many times than to make a small mistake.

    Mo:

Why don't you just turn off the unit when you're not running trains.

    Bob,

I always turn the unit off when I am not using it.

Thank for such a wonderful advice.

Instead of trying to rig something between the unit and the tracks and still possibly run the risk of frying the unit, why not make a little sign to serve as a reminder:
    Turn Off Power When Finished

It works for me in the tool room.
