What locomotives are actually the most popular? Let's see. List your favorite locomotives (they don't have to be ones you actually model.) Your list can be any length you want, but please try to make an order to it. I'll start this thread with my preferences. Here goes... My favorites can be classified into two categories. First, the beautiful: </font> SD80MAC/SD90MAC/SD70ACe - Love those huge radiators, the EMD widenose, and the overall size.</font> Niagara 4-8-4 - The smooth boiler, vestigial stack, and caterpillar tender.</font> DDA40X - Same reasons as SD80.</font> C415</font> SD45 - The sloped radiators enhance an engine that otherwise resembles the blandly good-looking SD40.</font> 6-4-4-6 turbine 6100</font> FM C-Liners</font> E7/E8/E9 - The only generic-looking beauty on my list.</font> GP60M - EMD widenose plus the most interesting dynamic brake radiator ever.</font> SD7/SD9 (excluding chop-nose rebuilds)</font> GP7/GP9 (excluding chop-nose rebuilds)</font> And the "fascinatingly ugly" (the Ron Perlmans of locomotives): </font> Baldwin Centipede - Nothing beautiful ever came out of Eddystone, but I like 'em anyway.</font> Baldwin DT-6-6-2000/Lima T2500 - I have a thing for big centercabs.</font> C-636/M-636 - The humpbacked look and stubby nose just do it for me. I prefer them with Hi-Ad trucks.</font> C39-8 - Reminds me of the C-636.</font> Baldwin Sharknoses</font> ML-4000 (Krauss-Maffei diesel-hydraulic cab unit)</font> C855</font> U50 - You can guess by now I like short short hoods.</font> DH643 - I thought the ML-4000 was the ugliest thing on rails until I saw this. Naturally, I loved it.</font> GP30 - That strange roofline...</font> BQ23-7 - Weird.</font> B39-8/B40-8 (excluding widenose)</font> E-44 electric - Is there any angle on this unit that isn't 90 degrees?</font> Your turn. Well, favorite in the sense that it is my absolute BEST running, best behaving loco, its my lil Atlas CB&Q GP-7. Quiet, great puller, really good slow speed performance. Favorite from a nostalgia sense would be my Rivarossi PRR GG-1. Sounds like a coffee grinder when its running, but still........
Argh! The unanswerable question! I can't put them in any order...... ummm. Milwaukee Road Little Joes, Bipolars, Boxcabs, Steeplecabs, Baldwin-Westinghouse motors. Steam? S-2, S-3 4-8-4? Northern Pacific U25C, SD45, L class 0-6-0, Mikes, Challengers, and..... M&StL RS1 in their various paints!!! Maine Two Foot Forneys. GN W class electrics. Help! I can't stop!!! Boxcab e50
For us Steam guys: 2-8-2 Heavy Mikado The 2-8-0 and 4-8-2 2-8-8-2 Mallet GS-4 4-8-4's Stay cool and run steam....
Favorite Diesels: 1. GP30 2. F3A 3. U23B Steam: 1. ANY Norfolk & Western Y-class Articulateds 2. New York Central Hudsons (streamlined & non) 3.New York Central Niagara
Would have to answer that based on the best scheme on my favorite engines; GS4 in Daylight and Freedom Train colours. GP7 in Maine Central Pine Green/multi stripe GP9 in B&M McGinnis blue bird GP30M in BNSF H1 F-7 in SF Warbonnet C44-9CW in BNSF H2
The good: At least two of ya hit it on the head- the F-unit series, from the FT to F9. Also, the EA to E6- gotta love that sloped nose. E7-E9 (especially the E8s in Frisco "racehorse" colors) GP7 (ugly to some, but reliable as all get-out. Laid the groundwork for every four-axle diesel all the way to the GP60). Alco PAs (big, brawny, beautiful) The bad Any Alco with a 244 prime mover- sorry, but the weak crankcase doomed Alco (and I like RS2s and RS3s) Alco C855 - a real POS the moment the frame was laid. The ugly Alco C415 Alco RS1 (still a very functional engine, and one of the first roadswitchers) EMD BL2 (bicycle chain guards on a badly-built F-unit shell? Please.....) SD70ACe, SD80MAC, SD90/SD9043MAC- they may run well, but they're STILL ugly!!) ANY diesel in badly faded, patched-over "rent-a-wreck" "colors"
Diesel : I gotta agree with the F unit group Steam : pick one, Shay, articulated, one of the GS series, or an older design, all cool. Electric : Steeple cab. Paint it in Western Pacific colors and I might even like a Chevy.
SD - 45 in GN EB or CP Multi Mark GG-1 (what, I'm the first to mention it!!!!) what's wrong with you guys. She is the queen of the rails. Man, I can't wait for one in GN EB, (no I dont' care that they never had one) U50s in GN EB - Stay tuned GP - 35 - something about that funky just behind the cab thinkingy
Diesels: SD-9's GP-9's F7's RS-11's DR-6-4-20 DH-643 H-10-44 H-15-44 HH660 S-2 Steam SP AC-9 Yellowstone SP AC-12 Cab Forward SP GS-4 4-8-4 War Baby SP GS-6 4-8-4 War Baby UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger PRR T1 4-4-4-4 C&O 2-6-6-6 Allegheny D&RGW K-27 2-8-2 0-6-0
My list Steam: C&NW E-4 Hudson NSWGR 32 class Diesel GE's - Dash 8 onwards both cab styles..... why not modern GMs are ugly and the GEs sound great as well. CLP/F's a modern E unit with a EMD710 BNSF Executive SD70MACs - the paint scheme love it - if it became BNSF's scheme then I would probably be modelling them. but alas they are slowly being repainted. Genesis - I've done umpteen thousand miles of rail travel in the US and they perform. I wish I could say the same for the XPT in NSW 620/720 railcars - just cute and survivors to built in the 60's and may retire in Dec this yr if the new cars are ready. ones I hate Tangaras - CityRail EMU, doors don't work, poor wheel slip control, cabs leak, poor ride quality - ugly SD70ACe's - ugly
I'd never heard of an AC-9 before you mentioned it. Just saw a picture today, and it is good-looking - better than any other steam articulated. (I still say the most interesting big steam is the Erie Triplex, but it isn't exactly a looker.) The skyline casing reminds me of a GS-4 warbaby. I do sort of like the latter - they're just not in my top engines.
Grey One, you weren't the first to mention the GG-1.....but I, too, was surprised that more didn't mention it!
