I just heard on ABC Radio News that the FBI will be keeping tabs on railfan web sites as this activity is apparently considered suspicious. Welcome aboard. Charlie
Glad to hear that our government has finally uncovered this conspiracy. Naw, I lied. Perhaps the manpower would be better expended as foot patrols on our southern border.
Sigh. I just did my taxes. I wonder how much of that will now be going to do surveillance on me. Eric
I wonder if they'll post, or just add to the number of lurkers. We could use some more activity on some of the Fallen Flag boards. Ed
LOL i seriously doubt that the would post. Probably just making sure we aint gonna do anything wrong. Next thing you know it would be illegal to railfan:angry: Alex
That was a joke, son, I say a joke (in my best imitation Foghorn Leghorn voice). Just left off the [humor][/humor] tags for easier reading. I wonder if I could get on with the FBI for this gig. I could telecommute from my home down here. Talk about a sweet job, spend the day surfing railfan websites. As I think about it, you might not be familiar with Foghorn Leghorn. That was waaayyy back in my youth. Still funny. Here's a link to a website with info on that character; http://onefoggy.tripod.com/flfaq.html Doesn't seem to be opening correctly, at least for me, right now. But we've had ISP problems locally for a few days. Regards Ed
LOL i kinda figure you was joking. But that would be the coolest job searching railfan website all day:thumbs_up: . You should try it out....lol Alex
Terrorists' sources of information. I expect that the FBI is looking for potential foreign, and probably domestic, terrorists mining the fans' knowledge base looking for opportunities to create havoc. With the propensity of railfans to share information, I can see fan websites and forums being a source of information on "choke points" where terrorist activity would inflict maximum damage. I've seen an inquiry or two I've wondered about over the past few years, you know the "Now why would he want to know that?" feeling. mg:
Hey FBI, Heres a hot tip,go to Railroad.net. Click on the NJT Rail forum. Theres a bunch of disgruntled commuters that want to harm the crews.:worried:
hmmmmm, maybe we will start seeing locomotives and freight cars with "FBIX" on them! With the motto "Ridin the rails to watch you"
I'll bet that somewhere in the FBI organization there's at least a model railroader - railfan. It would be a cool job for him / her.
Or we'll convert a bureau agent or two! All I gotta say, is when railfanning is outlawed, only outlaws will be railfans....
I agree. There's nothing on these boards that can't be learned through long observation, but this would speed it up. Let the FBI at least realize what information is available to terrorists. It's called intelligence gathering. In a twisted sort of way, it's good news. The government is starting to realize the importance of railroads!
I'm not going to worry much about the FBI monitoring this site. I'm sure they are using pretty sophisticated filters to hone in on "suspicious" activities. I sure they are also aware that it wouldn't take much to take out a major rail line. As defeatist as this sounds, we can not prevent every terrorist attack, nor defend every potential target. A bomb on a major bridge or in a crowded tunnel doesn't require any knowledge gleaned from this site.
Oh, wow, this is so cool! Maybe Charlie Eppes can crunch numb3rs with Dave H for spiral helix calculations whilst he's lurking?
