They let us off for a photo run by after leaving Burnett. Hey backed down the hill and came roaring back up. I was trying to take video when it was starting up and blowing all the smoke. By the time I took this shot it had a pretty clear exhaust. It was still breathing hard though.

I really wish we could see more classy paint jobs like these rolling the rails. Between the NS units and now what we see here, sure reminds me of what are missing from fifty years ago.

I thought my video was pretty crappy but I suppose I could post it on Utube anyway.

These pictures are from June 10 of this year at Spiez in Switzerland. There was a landslide on the Gotthard line the previous week, so all transalpine was routed thru the Simplon tunnel. Spiez is at the north end of the transalpine section of the Bern, Lotschberg, Simplon (BLS) rail line. DSCN0615.jpg First is a new Lotschberger set of four coupled passenger cars. These run in units of four to and from Zweisimmen to to the southwest toward Geneva, and to Brig just outside the Simplon tunnel. The four-unit sets are coupled to make an eight unit set for the run to and from Bern. I think this set came from Zweisimmen and is waiting for its mate before heading to Bern. DSCN0617.jpg These trailers are on HUPAC cars. HUPAC operates freight terminals in Italy and Germany, and runs thru Switzerland without stopping. The Swiss government subsidizes the service to reduce transalpine road traffic. HUPAC also operates roll on/roll off service that includes both the truck tractor and trailer. Those trains include a passenger car for the drivers. DSCN0620.jpg Some older rolling stock in a works train. DSCN0622.jpg A classic European tank car. You only see these on works trains these days.

More pictures from Spiez. DSCN0626.jpg First is a pair of container cars coupled by a drawbar. You can see the traditional buffer couplings at the left and right ends of the photo. All the container cars I saw in June were coupled by drawbar in pairs. DSCN0631.jpg This is an SBB Re 460 class locomotive, number 014, pushing a passenger set toward Interlaken. Lake Thun is in the background and Interlaken is situated between lakes Thun and Brienz. There's a driving trailer at the head of the set. Interlaken is a dead-end station (though two narrow gauge lines depart to the east and south) so on return the driver will operate from the engine. DSCN0637.jpg Lots of action in the final picture. At left an express double-decker passenger set is waiting clearance to proceed to Bern, in the background. A freight going the same direction will wait until it passes. In the center is an ETR-610 Cisalpino set. This train is tilting and multi-voltage in order to travel without interruption from Bern to Milan (or Munich-Zurich-Milan on the Gotthard). On the right is a commuter train also going to Bern.

Wow what a photo! I'm a big fan of the early steam-killers and the first E's seem so classy and so different but similar than the later models, thanks for sharing this gem with us.

Huge heat exchanger parked right across the street from my house.100+ feet long,it will be used in an oil refinery somewhere in the Mideast.Built at Air Products Corp. in Wilkes Barre Pa,it has made a ten mile trip north on the former D&H,now CP,and has come down the Dupont Connection to the former Lehigh Valley, now Reading & Northern. It will sit a few hours untill all other traffic is cleared up on the line East to the port of Philadelphia through Allentown,PA..Since it is so large,it actually has to cross over on the two track main in spots so it can negotiate some curved rock cuts. This is one of the few spots left in Northeast Pa with two track, track 2 only exists because of these monsters..
