It's that time again. Plaster City California, MLW/Bombardier DL535E a "modern" Narrow gauge alco undergoes maintenance at the US Gypsum plant. Don't remember the year, probably 2007. This engine was built for the White Pass and Yukon, but was never delivered as freight traffic dried up on the line.

I enlarged the pic. The box appears to be bolted to a plate that is bolted to the cab. I'm guessing it is some form of adhoc heat or AC.

I'm guessing here: It depends, sometimes about 60MPH. Usually about 30 to 40. If you map: 35 Harrison Street, Boston MA You will see 4 identical buildings parallel to the tracks. My unit is in one of them overlooking the tracks to the left. When the bilevels blow past at 60 the building shakes.
The Acela passes in about 5 seconds (at most), - based on length of clips I have taken. The longer commuter rail trains at speed will take about 15 seconds. On a slow day if there are issues it could take 30 or so seconds.
