Rough Day, late start. This 44 tonner is in what appears to be a small rolling stock repair facility near the popular bridge viewing spot above the West Colton Ca UP yard.
Ex L&N GP38-2. On the "Mudge" track at Englewood yard in Houston in 1996. Looks like it may be a lease unit with a rent-a-wreck reporting mark hand painted under the number. Although I have never heard of RLLX before.
A couple of years back, I chased a Mission Mountain Railroad train, originating at Eureka, Montana. This is a one man operation, as seen at right side of picture:
CN 2133 leading an empty grain train north out of Cedar Rapids on the CN Branch line. 4/10/13 UP's daily eastbound "bird" train at MP 76 on the Clinton Sub. 4/10/13
Can't speak to the RLLX. However, CSX retired around 30 ex-L&N GP38-2's. (Unusual, as much as CSX likes their 38's) #2582 became UP #473... still running on UP as of 2009.
I'm with you Bill. Whatever shifted must have been heavy to puncture the jacket like that and, it's hard to see with pole in the way, dent the cargo tank as it did. The car next to it must have had "Do not hump" tags on it. ? ? ? Carl
Got a little bit of UP this week. It's a nice change from the usual BNSF coal empties. Also a little but of shortline action I caught while on lunch break. Only 2 cars on the train today.
y2ktj- Welcome to Trainboard! What shortline are we looking at? I cannot quite read the name on that switcher.
Thanks for the welcome. It's the Huntsville and Madison County RR. They only have the one customer at the far end of their 15 mile line, but they'll usually run every other day to pick up or drop off 3-4 cars.
Hi y2ktj, Welcome to the TrainBoard, glad to have you on board. Where does the H&MC run? I lived at the Chateau Apartments off South Memorial Parkway in 1964. I know a lot has changed since then, but I can't visualize where this line might be, unless it was put in to serve the "new" airport and industrial area west of town.
The line runs from downtown Huntsville where it interchanges with the NS line and goes south almost all the way to the Tennessee river. It's the old NCStL/L&N line built in the early 1900's. Most of the RR is visible to the east when driving on Hwy 231/431. Those 2 pictures were taken around Weatherly Rd. There is a RR that serves the new airport and and some industries, but i don't have any pictures of it (yet).
Oops, I'd forgotten the L&N line to the south. I'll look for it on Google Earth...thanks. EDIT - Wow, Google Earth shows a lot of covered hoppers in storage near the south end of that line, must be a couple of dozen at least. Also, sad to see that the line just ends in the woods near the River. Looks like the abandoned roadbed is now a service drive into the residential area.
