That smokestack reminds me of an onion...a Walla Walla onion since we're in the Pacific Northwest...though not near Walla Walla Washington (Nor Cucamonga, nor Coachella nor Pismo Beach nor any other Mel Blanc/Bugs Bunny related locations (Hocus Cadabra! Abracapocus!) But we are stuck in Tillamook on a typical overcast day in 2010 I know none of the details on this engine. Perhaps Fitz or some other PacNW steam fiend can provide background.
Maybe you should have turned left at Albuquerque... From my Dad's slides. some Burdakin Blue from August 1979: S4045A_GTW_Dbl-Door_Boxcar_375715 by Mike VE2TRV posted Mar 17, 2017 at 7:37 PM In the 1970s, when many railroads' infrastructure was going to pots (or pans... I think I'll go take a wok...groan...), Grand Trunk Western decided to market its record for good track maintenance by putting the slogan "The Good Track Road" on some of its rolling stock, including this ACF-built box car. While not stuck in Tillamook, we did get plastered with about 18 inches of snow here (some places east and south of here got 30 inches!) from Tuesday into Wednesday. On the up side, by Thursday afternoon the city had already picked up and carried off the snow from the side of the street and sidewalks! Usually they wait until two days before the next one to do that. Old Man Winter was just reminding us that he's still in charge at least until the 21st.
Here is one from about two years ago. On the Taieri Gorge Railway out of Dunedin, New Zealand. The class DJ locomotives were built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries using Caterpillar prime movers. Arriving in the late 1960s, they replaced the last steam locomotives operating on the South Island. Five of these heritage locomotives are preserved on the Taieri Gorge Railway.
Had to spend some time in Billings, but didn't get much time for train watching until when I saw these MRL units Friday evening.
