And it looks like there's some rust perforation at the bottom front of the short hood. The one in charge of maintaining that venerable old soldier needs a good talkin' to...
An SOU train headed by a high hood GP-30 is seen in June 1984 just east of Montgomery, AL. Such a fine paint scheme and road! This line has since been completely removed and NS no longer serves Montgomery. The 2549 went on to a new life on BN as their 2770 after a rebuild.
It is simply difficult to comprehend the miles of downgraded and removed former main lines, let alone branches.
The rotary all hooked up n ready to go at Glendive. The 1548 is the power unit for the rotary, which has 4 traction motors in it to drive the blades.
Sad indeed. In the case of Montgomery, AL, the SAL served it as well and that line too is removed. It breaks my heart to see Curtis' photographs and read that N&W and VGN coal branches are being mothballed. Coal was the lifeblood of these roads and it's unlikely we'll ever see it again in the volumes we knew. Makes me want to make another trip to WV to take a last look.
