As the years have gone past, I begin to look at the MKT diesel assortment as much like that of the Milwaukee Road. With the various manufacturers and models, the rebuilds, the weathered appearance of some units.....
AT&SF 'Prairie' #1826 pauses in front of the E. Hannah Vista depot on my HO scale "Gulf & Pacific" Railroad one evening in 1965. John
Nice scene. I wonder why the Santa Fe liked Prairies and kept them so late, when other roads began dropping them early in the 20th Century?
Candy, Well done! Here's a photo from the Pinnacle Creek Mining & Timber Co. layout. This layout like all my others will begin deconstructing this weekend.
Argh!!! I am supposing there will be a new and improved version coming? Still, it is sad to see something this good go away!
Russell and Boxcab. The layouts only last about 14 months around here. That includes building time. I just enjoy building and taking pictures. I've shot this layout from every angle so time to move on. I took 50 trees off the layout this afternoon, so if anyone wants it bring a $2500 and it's all yours! Jim I don't think this photo has ever been made public:
While one Trainboard layout deconstructs, another one is in progress! Ex-CP&E SD9 #2126 coming out of the tunnel somewhere between Burning Springs and Grantsville, WV in March 1968. Still much work to do. I need to make rock castings, then paint everything before I start ballast and ties.
Pat, I like your post. Thanks. You have a good photo showing good scenery building techniques plus the loco. Something for all. Jim
Not too many photos this weekend. All the trees and bushes in this photo are gone now as deconstruction continues. Jim
What you already knew but didn't want to admit. The Santa Fe mainline was relatively flat after leaving Chicago, west bound to Kansas City down to La Junta and up to Denver. Those Prairies could pull passenger trains fairly efficiently. On Raton Pass they used the 2-10-0's in helper service. Typically the stoves with the taller wheels operated passenger trains over the flat lands while those with shorter wheel basses plied the mountainous areas. I bet you already knew that. Grin!
Speaking of layouts under construction: Frisco SW7 300 leads a local north of Paris, TX to Hugo, OK, where it will swap cars and return to Paris to switch out Campbell Soup. In actuality, this will look better with scads of green and chat ballast, but this is what I have so far on my HO scale SLSF layout. Model is a BLI product (DCC-ready, but not yet equipped).
