A couple of locomotives prepare to move hazardous waste rail cars to a dumping structure at a hazardous waste disposal facility just across the Texas border from Eunice, NM. Photo on private property with permission. Couldn't do anything about the fence from the vehicle!

From exactly 37 years ago today in 1987, a BN freight is seen crossing the C&NW at Rochelle, IL. The 3008 is a GP-40.

My wife and I are up in East Texas today to ride on the Texas State Railroad. We have reservations to ride in this car. We have already ridden on it when it was in service on the Mt. Hood RR in Oregon a number of years back.

The train left out of Palestine this morning and traveled to Rusk, Texas where the locomotive was disconected, wyed and backed to the shops for servicing. After lunch they brought it back to couple on to the other end of the train for the trip back to Palestine. Here it is coming out of the "Piney Woods" back from the shops.

The 2-8-2 locomotive was built by Baldwin in 1917 for the Tremont & Gulf Railway, a Louisiana short line, as #30.

There's some exceptional photography - and subjects - this week!

That little wooden trestle is very interesting. As are the four Brookville units - very handsome!

    Keep it up, guys!(y)

Turns out a friend of mine was there as well chasing the train. He took this photo when our train passed by.

For future reference, a trick I was shown years ago was that if you get close enough to a fence like that, it will be so out of focus it won't even show in the photo.

A black dog and a pumpkin? I'm a little late to the game this week, but caught this pair of Huron and Eastern units tied up at Vassar, MI late Saturday afternoon. 3037's black paint marks it as one of the units that came to HESR with the Central Michigan merger, while 2026 is a relative latecomer. This was the best shot I could get with the signal department obviously using the area for storage.

That is an excellent picture. Great way to bridge the gap between a locomotive pic and passenger car pic!

Not as good a picture as the locos above, but saw this oldy in the Reno yard. There was a pair of them but could not get a good view of the other one for a pic. Do not see very many SP cars around much these days. sp car.jpg

Here's a slide I recently purchased. There is no photographer or date, but the location is easy to identify. This is the Blommer Chocolate Company in Chicago's Fulton River neighboorhood. Based on the railcars and a few automobiles in the background, I would estimate this photo being taken sometime in the 80's. Today, the yard in the foreground is no longer there, but the plant still has rail access. There are some new high-rises in the area, but the yard has become a city park. The curved viaduct in the background is the approach to Ogilvie station, which is out of frame to the right, a few blocks away. Another thing to note is the ATSF reefer patched for FGMR, which is also the reporting mark on the other FGE Solid Cold reefers.

I have a higher resolution image uploaded to Flickr in case anyone wants to zoom in and look at the details, Trainboard restricts the dimensions of the images to 2000 pixels wide.
