Was given this recipe for weathering solution. The claim is it makes great colors for weathering wood.

½ pint white vinegar and 0000 steel wool. Pour the vinegar in a bowl and then break up the steel wool and it to the bowl. Let sit for 7 days.

Must be done where the terrible smell is acceptable.

Anyone have any experience with it?

I've heard of it. It is supposed to give hardwood the "gray" weathered look. If something else is used today to get the same result, I don't know what it is.

    Carl:

You can use washes of earth tone colors to give you the same effect, diluted with blue windshield wiper solution. This works for me.

I've read about it on some woodworking forums. The solution is used to "ebonize" wood. Google it. I remember some warning about straining it through a coffee filter and don't get bits of the pad in the solution because they may turn to red rust on the wood.

I suspect from my hazy recollection of chemistry that the solution is Iron III oxide; whatever the next step up from rust is. Similar to the black oxide finish on chisels and drill bits. But then again, it's been a loooong time, so I could be totally off base with the chemistry.
