I don't have many N scale cars but here's how I like to fade white lettering. I sprayed a light coat of matching car color over it. On this one I wiped it with a cloth which left a speckled effect on the letters. The rest is common practice methods.

Looks like a nice approximation of rusting through!

    Thanks BC! :)

    Thanks for the props Craig!
Yep, it's an Atlas 60', here is how turned out...

While the weathering is ok [ one of my earlier ones] what I really liked about it is the faded color.
This is the car where I realized how much a good fade could do!

I still need to pick up some terra-cotta sometime and give that a try...;)

Nice job on that car Allen! I'm digging the rust spots very much and the roof looks legit as they say on the rust bucket...
Speaking of Terra Cotta here is an C&NW Red Atlas car I faded and applied multiple varying hues to with cheap Terra-Cotta craft paint.
Lettering was cleaned up with a toothpick prior to proceeding with the rest of the attack per Gary Christensen's tutorials.
The heavy rust panels were done with dark brown craft paint not oils. No

Well...... it doesn't look too bad.
Not to be ragging on you but it's a little too dark to see exactly what you've done to it.
Try taking it outside for some natural lighting with the sun behind you're back or turn on a lamp behind you and the camera
so it shines on the model and lights it up better. The trucks are almost completely shadowed and can't be seen.

Good on you for taking your first swing at weathering. You're off to a good start. You didn't go too dark. I'd hit the cage ends with more of the wash and paint the coupler a rust. Paint the coupler pin black as well. What did you use for the grime wash?

Just use Pan Pastels on the sides and roof. Use a wash in the trucks and throw some pigments on the trucks while they are still wet. No airbrush required.

Spray flat finish on the car before weathering. Not Dullcote.

With the lighting everything shows up good now!
It's always so easy to over weather stuff. Nice, believable, subtle weathering! (y)

bremner-thanks for shedding more light on your car. Nice mild weathering and a very good start!
One callout would be what looks from you pic some hard edges (water spots) on
the left roof corner and the right corner on the side panel.
    I'm always fighting that myself.
    Keep em coming!
