    Loco1999;
What kind of camera are you using for those photos? The rooftop shots are really nice for being so close!
I just got my hands on a used 50mm macro lens for my Canon AE-1, but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I hope it lets me take shots like yours.

    Cannon PowerShot S50 - 5 MP

    tripod
    portrait mode
    macro mode - on
    flash - off
    2 sec timer - on
    digital zoom - off

Read some tips from this forum.
I think is was atsf_arizona in a SNFF?
    And some experimenting.
The 75 watt light bulb could be better.

    John:

I have a 95mm macro lens for my Canon A-1. It still doesn't come close to a digital camera. I use a Nikon Coolpix 4300.

The Canon A-1 with the 95mm macro lens does give you outstanding depth of field that a digital camera can't come close to:

Can you use the micro trains running boards?
Or just look at etched metal ones ?

If micro trains are ok, 40' old or 40' ps-1.
Either way, how do you identify a ps-1?

Is there a reference book or website
to get me up to speed on rolling stock.

    Thanks,
    Loco1999

Here are a few more attempts....

All you have to do is add some burnt sienna to the couplers to simulate aged rusting.

Loco1999, the Micro-Trains runningboards are a big improvement over most any other except the newest Atlas. What Micro-Trains calls its "PS-1" runningboard is the steel non-slip grated running board, which is what the one on your car is supposed to represent. The "old" runningboard is the wooden type made of wooden decking. These were used in new car construction until 1943, but many cars retained them until runningboards were outlawed.

As to websites try www.streamfreightcars.com - one of my favorites. [IMG]

We're making loco spend more $$ on his model but I guess it's worth it to us, huh? [IMG] But it's really good now and maybe you'd like to see it as great.

So I'd spring for the Plano 40' boxcar running board. Much thinner and more realistic than the GM one. There was a package of different running boards for US cars imported from England that was a good deal; you might try to find that.

This car (these cars? are we gonna make you do all 3?) comes from the era when most real new cars had metal running boards. so if you see the MT PS-1 one, it has the tread pattern but no see-through effect.

PS-1 boxcars: There is an old multipart series in Railmodel Journal; that's all I know. The PS-1 40' boxcars are distinguished by the style of ends, the pattern of tabs along the bottom side sill (easiest spotting feature and distinctive), and the embossed pattern on the roof.

    Very nice,

the only way to get good weathering is practicing and not being affraid to screw up, although it can (and will) happen!

    Loco;
I'm diggin' those WP cars! I have the covered hopper, but who made the plug door box? At first, I thought it was a Bachmann car, but mine doesn't have "The Western Way" on it. Actually, the Bachmann car is labled as a mechanical reefer but WP never had any 40 ft versions. Is it an Atlas car?

Thanks for the feedback and good info. [IMG]
That url is not working for me. :(

I may pick a couple of cars to work on.
I'm getting back to working on the layout.

WP box is an old atlas, I think.
