There is a now defunct substation and railyard in Waukegan Il., northeast Illinois on Lake Michigan. The railyard is still in use, but there are major plans for a complete revamp of the yard and usage. I think it may become a transit hub; I am uncertain. In any case I get into the area on occasion and took these photos with my phone on my last trip out, with the exception on the google earth overview image. This is the now closed substation. The old sanding tower. Some rolling stock. A photo of the actual substation
I grew up along the EJ&E in the late '60s and '70s and I remember seeing coal trains headed to the Waukegan power plant. Much of it came off the BN back then, interchanged with the J at Eola, IL, but I also remember seeing matched GM&O units on other coal trains, perhaps with Illinois coal. The plant was shut last summer I think. I think the J's terminal with turntable and roundhouse is gone today. On 01/06/1975 one of those heavy BN trains spilt a switch at Barrington, IL. Quite the mess. I took this picture the following day.
Hopefully @KWE might know. I tried to figure that out as I prepared my post above and the changes up that way have left me completely confused.
Actually, both! UP operates on former C&NW trackage, the Kenosha sub, while CN runs on the Leithton sub, formerly EJ&E rails.
From my understanding this entire yard my no longer be in existence in the near future, with the exception of the Metra line. Waukegan has been tossing around plans for at least the last decade to revitalize the lake front region which includes the property the yard is built upon.
