Read today that the former NP water tank at Logan, MT on the MRL, a longtime landmark is being torn town. Photos from last summer and a link to the Belgrade, MT news report can be found here: http://mrlblog.qstation.org/?p=840 Brian Ambrose Renton, WA
unless it was maintained, I can see why it would need to be taken down. I live within 100 miles of 3 surviving SP water towers, fortunatly, they are the town's water supply. I know it's sad, but is it worth having a water tower thatmight fall at any moment?
Sad, but I'm sure it was either fix or tear down. Because it had been empty for so long, the wood had dried out and shrunk, and all the reinforcing bands had fallen down to the bottom. Not much reason to fix it........
I'm aware of it's condition. My comment was only to lament the passing of yet another artifact. No more. Boxcab E50
Too bad it couldn't have been moved to Three Forks along with the Trident depot. I haven't heard any more on that.
One of the projects I was involved in a few years ago had to do with the preservation and historically sensitive structural retrofit of the water tower at a former island prison (name withheld, but it's avwell-known place). These are top-heavy structures built, fortunately, with a lot of redundancy to their structure, but still, it is difficult to convince folks to part with the cash necessary for something that no longer has a function other than historic landmark. I think they're still trying to arrange financing to fix that one. Adam
If there'd been a chance, it could have been dismantled, moved and safely stored for later reassembly. Boxcab E50
