This was posted on another forum. I thought it could be helpful, and its just COOL!~for us fallen flag dudes. Map It's amazing how much rail there used to be.
I have a copy of that map. About 25 years ago, someone unearthed a stash of them, and sold them at train meets in western Washington. As far as I recall, $5.00 each in original envelope. Interesting to note that I have also seen the same map as part of a Northern Pacific western travel type publication- I had one. It was in a blue folder, with NP Yellowstone Park monad on front. Traded it away for something Milw... What I like, is looking at the proposed lines- Such as across the Cascades east from Morton.... Boxcab E50
Not milwaukee but did the GN east or Oroville over to the Republic line exsist for real? You do not hear much abouth the GN north of the border. KEvin
Kevin- Yes. That particular GN north of the Washington border was real. I have a GN train order from Keremeos, BC. There was also the line up to Nelson, BC. Salmo, BC, was the last open GN office going northward. As I understand it, quite a busy place years ago... Boxcab E50
Yes, there's quite a history of GN in southern BC. Although this book is more about the CPR, it also tells in detail about GN's competitiveness throughout the area. McCulloch’s Wonder Another link about GN in the Fraser Valley / Vancouver BC area if anyone's interested: Great Northern Railway in BC's Fraser Valley (1) As a small lad, I remember riding on the GN train from Vancouver to White Rock.
Ken That's funny, one guy on the other forum said "a guy was selling these maps at a train show, now I wish I would have bought one"? He is in western Washington state. LOL, small world?
It was at the Boeing Employees Model Railroad Club swap meet, when they were still held at the old Boeing Company headquarters cafeteria, west side of Boeing Field in Seattle. I had a table and was thinning down my Lionel collection. I also remember another thing being sold- A fellow had a pile of Milwaukee Road calendars. Don't recall which year- 1957 I believe. All were new in their original unaddressed shipping envelopes. $5.00 each. I should have bought the pile. Today, worth substantial $$$! A side note here, no offers to kick me for missing the opportunities there will be excepted- I do that to myself frequently enough! Small, indeed! Seems like it's shrinking daily! :tb-wacky: Boxcab E50
GN moved a lot of ore out the whole area way back when; one of these days I'll have to take a trip and explore. Can't remember the last time I was through there. Do you have any suggestions for historical reading material about GN in Washington/Idaho/Montana/BC?
You might try asking this question in our GN Fallen flags Forum. I'd bet several folks will have good reading suggestions. Boxcab E50
