Has anyone converted the Walthers Thrall container well car to an All Purpose version, that can carry trailers also ? If so, I would sure like to hear of your experience !
All Purpose cars ? I haven't seen this conversion done to a Walthers car but have seen it on a Roundhouse or Concor husky stack car. I'm not sure, but I have never seen a prototype 'all purpose' car on a Thrall well car. BTW-FWIW Walthers has their Thrall well cars on sale, (N scale) at HALF-PRICE! if you need to fill in some cars. 5,4 & 3 car sets as well as stand alones! 2slim
Thanks for the heads up on that sale, I got 2 5 car sets, a 3 car set, and a stand alone for $50. WOW. Does this signal a new release/update?
2slim, the ConCor Husky Stack was an "AP Husky Stack" as released. Alantic Flier, DTTX430150 is definately a NSC built car and I don't think the CN cars are Thralls either, they appear to be home built by CN. http://members.surfbest.net/intermodal@surfbest.net/STACK.HTM Thrall did make COFC/TOFC well cars though, as the above link shows. I agree though, it would be nice to have a "decent" model of a AP Husky Stack in N, of any prototype.
Metro, I found them on the site by clicking "shop" at the top. Then in the search fields I chose freight cars, n scale, and put Walthers in for the manufacturer. It was on the first page of results I do believe. That being said, it would be nice to know how you guys find out about those kinds of sales. That's just about the best deal I've ever found...I'm (read: my wallet) just glad they didn't have more road #s.
Thanks I made an order of one of each of the 5-unit set!!! Here's a link to make life easier on you folks! http://www.walthers.com/exec/search...ck=Q&showdisc=Y&sale=Y&split=30&Submit=Search
The Con-Cor husky stack looks great and runs well after some minor upgrades. I used some moldable putty to build up a small "T" around the kingpin hole. This adds weight and allows the trucks to swivel freely. I then added Atlas 100T trucks and IMRC 36' metal wheels. Goldmedal etched walkways and handrails completed the conversion. The end result looks as good as the Kato or Deluxe Maxi cars with very little effort.
Thanks for the link James: What a listing ! Heres' the ones I need to find photos of that are Thrall built COFC /TOFC per the list; DTTX 432000-432115 (116) 3 - 48' Wells COFC/TOFC, drawbar Thrall 11-12/95 TWA30 ex# BNSF 63200-63315 in 1997 DTTX 454000-454149 150 1 - 48' Well TOFC/COFC Thrall 1/95 TWA10 FEC 4401-4500 100 1 - 48' Well TOFC/COFC Thrall 1-2/95 none maybe be a simple kitbash to add the trailer hitch ? Have to see pics.....
Looks like at leat some of your number ranges can be found at http://www.rrpicturearchives.net , such as.... http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsList.aspx?id=DTTX&cid=9&Page=13 Russ
I didn't know about this prototype. Cool to learn something new. Um, AHEM....is the ALAN CURTIS kit I'm putting together not "decent"??
Not exactly a simple bash, but doable. I can't say exactly without seeing a top down pic, but the major tasks would be... 1) Mill away most of the end platform beyond where the truck kingpin inserts. Leave a small channel in the center if you want to attach a body mount coupler. 2) Remove the plastic walkways and mill away the side walkways and all walkway supports. Replace, probably, with Gold Medal Models etched walkways made for the Con-Cor model. 3) Replace the side walkways with square brass rod, preferably with a filed bevel. 4) Obtain hitch details and glue them on. 5) Model the additional welded-on cross supports along the bottom of the car.
It sure IS "All Purpose"...He made the 48' AP NSC articulated 3-pack, which is now sitting on my workpad awaiting paint. Sorry, I should have specified the model. And admittedly, it's now out of production.
