Since I posted this in the What's On Your Workbench area, it appears to be a very popular kit, and as not to flood that category as well as others with messages about this kit having already been built and now people interested in maybe building it, and to document how I am building mine, and get feedback from other build's past, present, and future of this kit. So I am making a specific post so we can all learn from each other.

Alright here goes mine and the paint pens I am using for it. Painting the front wall is the big topic about this kit. It appears each person has a different approach as well as color selection.

If you have built it please post pictures of your version(s) for us to learn. Paint brush, paint pens, photos to enhance the kit, etc...

    Ok I will bite.

So, ya’all have seen this before but a bit of the how to, or the what did Massey do. The stones were painted using 4 different colors, grey, brown, blue, and green. The real DQ down the street from me that is still decorated like this one has a few other colors in their stones, but mostly just different shades of brown. I used a “very fine” brush and very little actual paint on the brush. I usually got a dab on the stone and then would let it dry, then come back again and the paint would be dry, and the second coat would cover just fine. The brown around the lower area was a custom mix using a brown and I believe white and black to get just right. This was applied with a wide brush. And lastly the Orange for the top. Well that didn’t work as well as planned. So I had no Orange paint so I figured I would make some. Well red and yellow dont make orange in Apple Barrel paints. They make some nasty brown. It didn’t matter my ratio or what, the pigments were not compatible. I eventually found a combo that worked, but not a good shade and it had no body so coverage was poor. Then I found an orange that looked right and it covered pretty good, and that’s what you see. I painted this area also by brush with a thin medium brush that is fine enough for detail work.

So that’s my story and I’m stickin to it.

Does the Apple Barrel paint adhere well to the plastic?

Yes, they actually work quite well, just about all the models I have painted in all my builds have been with Apple Barrel paints. The only dislike is some colors have great coverage, while others take multiple coats.

Do you do any special prep work to the parts, scrub with cleanser or very mild abrasive?

Just wash the parts with Dawn dish detergent. That will remove any release agent that may still be on the plastic. That’s it…

Mine. Also done with craft paints and bad brush work (at least this close up). I have an interior and a removable roof so lighting will be done at come point.

The one two blocks away is smaller and only has the side door. The front façade is not as colorful. It's like most brick faced buildings. A mixture of tans and browns. I have never seen one so colorful. No orange. That's left for A&W.

I think it looks nice, and for some reason I have a sudden hankerin' for a Blizzard. :D I get mine as the Banana Split, made with chocolate ice cream. I have done it like that for a long time, and while it's not always on the menu board, they seem to do it up all the same.

I’m using these paint pens for mine. Came with 12 colors for $10.00. I took liberty for my front brick work colors. These kits look better from a normal viewing distance. Or at least mine does. Man the close up pictures show every little painting error. Thank goodness it will be normal distance viewing and lighting :) Also gonna find out exactly how much paint is in these said pens.

Time to paint the orange at the top and brown at the bottom I have been avoiding painting those areas.

Alright windows and door in, only have to do final clue of pieces and this one is done. Now to see if it will fit on diorama for now? That was a fun kit.

IF(!) you have some spare roof top details around they would really enhance the plain roof. Even some various sized pipes painted accordingly would help.

For me the cars out front are parked wrong. There's a street with parking only on that side and a city bus stop on the other side. A lot of folks come from the other side of town for a treat. :) Or two. ;)

HVAC 3D pieces will be headed this way soon from a friend. And in the future probably other roof parts. Might either paint it or use black fine sand paper on it.

Confused are you talking about your local DQ Grill & Chill? Wait till I try and fit it in the diorama. It’s gonna be tight. But when it moves to the “normal” layout it should be better, I hope? 6 1/2” square area on diorama is gonna be a tight fit. Might not work. Also need some people with ice cream. Think Woodland Scenics sells them?

Gonna be a tight fit on the diorama. I’ll make it work. All will move to main layout at some point anyway.

Adding some touches. Also camera shows some touch spots needed. Painters tap and these paint pens are awesome.
