In the Via timetable there are several "J" trains listed. What is a "J" train you ask? From my quick look over the timetable they are used between Toronto and Brockville where the train is split. One train operates Brockville to Montreal and the other consist Brockville to Ottawa. J trains are only operated in one direction - east. The J train refers to the portion between Toronto and Brockville where the two trains are operated together.

Do you know how the second train's engine is being operated? For example, along for the ride at idle, providing HEP only to the second train, or providing mid-train power controlled from the lead cab? Also, is the second train's crew aboard for the whole run, or do they board at the separation junction? If the latter, then VIA has negotiated a major labor (cost) saving measure....wonder if (when) the US freight rail companies will try to negotiate this?

This procedure was explained to me last year by one of the hoggers. At that time, the second unit (Ottawa train) was providing traction and HEP power. The Ottawa crew was riding the Ottawa consist - they are onboard for the whole journey. When the train stops just west of the Brockville station, the Ottawa crew disconnects the MU cables and sets up the uncoupling move. In the last month I have been on two J trains, and the uncoupling procedure took less than 3 minutes. After uncoupling, the Montreal portion continues east, does the Brockville station stop, then leaves for Montreal. The Ottawa portion stops in Brockville just after the Montreal portion has departed. While the Ottawa portion is stopped at Brockville, the switch is aligned for the Ottawa route.

Sounds like a slick way to operate those trains. Saves an extra track occupation for the first part of the run. Similar to some operations here in the UK, but we use DMU's for those services.
