VIA 6133 which has been a temporary replacement for VIA 6205 on the Sudbury-White River run. 6133 should be in service from Victoria-Nanaimo-Courtenay sometime next week, either Wednsday or Friday. Its replacement, 6130 will be sent to FarmRail, who has been kind enough to lease it to VIA.

VIA's first refurbished rail diesel car to make inaugural run from Sudbury
MONTREAL - VIA Rail Canada's first refurbished Rail Diesel Car will make its inaugural run tomorrow, delivering more reliable and comfortable service for passengers on VIA Rail's Sudbury - Chapleau - White River train.

VIA uses five self-propelled Rail Diesel Cars (RDCs) to provide passenger service on the Sudbury line and on the Victoria-Courtenay line in British Columbia. VIA's $2.4 million project to refurbish the cars, originally built in 1954, includes a complete overhaul of all mechanical systems and car trucks, which will increase reliability and on-time performance dramatically. Car interiors are also being completely refurbished to provide better comfort and service to customers.

The car leaving Sudbury tomorrow is the first to be completed. A second car will be ready in February, 2002. The last three cars will be completed by the end of 2002.

The RDC investment is part of VIA's comprehensive equipment renewal program, made possible by a five-year, $402 million federal investment in passenger rail. Passenger rail across Canada has enjoyed significant growth in ridership and revenues in recent years. The capital investment is giving VIA the modern equipment, tracks, signalling, and facilities it needs to meet the growing demand, while ensuring safe, efficient operations.

The Sudbury train departs for White River on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 9:40 am, arriving in Chapleau at 2:30 pm and in White River at 6 pm. It returns from White River on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays, departing at 9:30 am, arriving in Chapleau at 2:00 pm, and in Sudbury at 7 pm.

All the E&N RDC's will not be rebuilt, since the E&N will shut down all operations by the end of next March.
