Shot taken Oct of 1984...with this rather forlorn looking Cowl unit...at their Helper Utah facility...

The UTAH had several ex-BN F45s. Notice how they turned the BN logo on the cab to a U. They got these through MK. The last F45 they had on the roster was an ex-SF F45, that Boise Locomotive WOrks painted in the UTAH scheme; 9013.
Most of these F45s wound up back in Boise and were converted to other types of locos or scrapped.
The cowls were even used to create some of the F40PH lookalikes that were used on the passenger routes back east (Iwant to say in Mass., but I'm not sure).
This is at Martin yard, near Helper. Helper yard was owned by the D&RGW.

MARC uses a bunch of F45 cabbed GP40 derived machines in the Washington DC area, interesting loco's.

I think 6607 is one of the original GN ones, delivered in big sky blue...

Were any of these ever repainted into Utah RR colors? I don't recall ever hearing that they were.

All 4 BN F45s were ex-GN. The 6613 was the last locomotive that was delivered to the GN before the merger as its 440.

I had spoken with one of the UTAH engineers, and he said that they liked the ride of the F45, but it wasn't too good on backup moves. That's why it was regulated to about the second or third unit of the helper sets. When the 9013 was freshly painted it was on the point quite often, but as the years went by...well, the paint got really dirty!!
