I believe this is what they were classified as...taken in Las Vegas 22 yrs ago...were these unique to UP, or were these rebuilds from another type of loco, or just not that popular with other RR's ?

    NscaleMIKE:
The SW10 was a UP contrivance from the GP7 and GP9 into a switcher loco. They were strictly a UP product. A few were outshopped from the SLC engine facility. They used to have quite a few in the SLC North yard there by the refineries.

If you're into a little history (and quite a bit of reading), I offer the following:

Rugged Little Beasts, by Don Strack

To cut it short, the SW10 roster consisted of 75 rebuilt switchers (SW7, SW9s, TR5as, etc) with 645 power assemblies in the prome movers, ew wiring, radiators, etc. to create a 1200 HP switcher. The fleet lasted until 1998, when all but the 96 had been retired or sold for scrap.

It's a pretty nice little article, BTW, and includes a roster.

    Thanks, Bob!
I didn't know the 96's stablemates were all but extinct...
