Every now and then I read about people asking about different pieces of equipment saved in Cheyenne, WY. I don't have many answers but here are some fresh shots taken this past weekend. A few old pieces and a couple of new additions. Here is the last CNW F unit in Cheyenne. There used to be 2 or 3 others but have since moved on. I think they were rebuilt and are running back East somewhere. The 401 continues to rust outside the steam shop. At least it wasn't scraped! This shot will bring Hemi and other Rio Grande fans to tears. This old B unit has seen better days. It has set outside the Cheyenne roundhouse like this for several years. I don't believe there is much hope in the future for an overhaul of any sort. With a lot of work it would look great at the CO RR Museum or down in Cannon City pulling dinner trains throgh the Royal Gorge! Not sure when this showed up in Chyenne. It is resting outside the steam shop. I know of at least one member of the steam crew who has a special place in his heart for the Rock Island. Probably why it is there. Where it is going in the future I don't know. Nice fresh paint though!
Steve Lee saved the Green River derrick from the cutting torch. It now rests in Cheyenne, WY. What the future holds I have no idea. A close-up of the derrick itself.
How does one know a UP big hook's assignment? The 5763 sure looks to be in sad shape. Far from the grand service pulling the RGZ in the 80's! I really wish I bagged more shots of the stores dept and other UP boxcars in Cheyenne. There are so many flavors of them, most just dying to be modeled.
I'm not a big DRGW fan, but I do have a soft spot in my heart for F-units, and the sorry sight of that F7B sickens me. I'm not that happy about the condition of those CNW units, either............. When I was in Cheyenne last (October 2005), I noticed some SP-looking passenger cars behind the steam shop. I'm guessing they're long gone by now.............
Frisco, I believe they are still there. I am not sure when the next time I will be back up in Cheyenne, but if I have time I will try and get a shot or two for you.
That derrick is really neat. Glad Steve Lee was able to save it. Hopefully he will make sure that those F units get some tender care and repair.
