My shots of the UP Special are up on my website. There was a last minute schedule change which eliminated the layover in Bakersfield, sending the train over Tehachapi a day early. Here is one of the eight photos from my site. Enjoy... ------------------ Kevin Stevens www.trainweb.org/KernJunction
Kevin, as I have said before - you are a lucky devil living where you do Thanks for the super pics.! ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery

Did you need to trek far to capture this, or is it near a roadway? Gary. Resistance is futile - you will be assimilated!

Attached is the map of the area from my web site. The photo location is about halfway between Caliente and the red star on the map which marks the location of Tunnel #2 (another location I shot the 6936). ------------------ Kevin Stevens www.trainweb.org/KernJunction
Hey Kevin "Lucky" Stevens, what is that monster pulling the passenger cars? Are you guys feeding your engines vitamins or something? Great photos, you lucky dog! ------------------ Watash
Kevin, did you get a shot of the dome car? Is it one with a huge plate glass window at the end? ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery

It was my only going away shot, and it didn't "make the cut". But since it was requested, how could I say no. BTW, the scan is enlarged from a more panoramic print, hence the fuzziness and grain. ------------------ Kevin Stevens www.trainweb.org/KernJunction
Kevin, those ties look like concrete! Are they plastic, old news papers? What? ------------------ Watash
Thanks Kevin I would love to ride in that! When we were over at Caliente, watching the clean-up of a derailment on the grade crossing, we met a UP Superintendent, Gary Davidson, a very friendly man, especially when he heard we were from England I wonder if he was on the train? ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery

quote:
Originally posted by watash: Kevin, those ties look like concrete! Are they plastic, old news papers? What?

The UP rebuilt the Tehachapi Pass line a few years ago using concrete ties in place of wood. As for your previous post, I guess you could call 6936 UP's diesel version of the Big Boy. It's been taking steroids, not vitamins . All kidding aside, the 6936 is an impressive beast to both see and hear. It is 98 feet long, and holds two 3300 hp EMD 16 cylinder 645 prime movers. ------------------ Kevin Stevens www.trainweb.org/KernJunction

quote:
Originally posted by CPRailfan: Awesome photos! BTW Kevin, how did you get a 'railroad only' map at Mapquest?

Glad you liked the pictures of the UP 6936. As for the map question, I assume you are talking about the clickable map on my main Kern County locations page. While the individual maps on each location page are from Mapquest, the main map with color coded rail lines is actually my own creation. It was scaled and drawn using the MS Paint utility, then manipulated in Ulead's PhotoImpact to add the clickable hotspots in the image. As far as I know, Mapquest does not offer such a map. Hope this answers your question. If you have any others, feel free to ask.
Thanks Kevin! I am working on a page as well and was planning on having a map with clickable hot spots too It'll take some time, but I'll make a cool map of the Milwaukee area and hopefully by this summer, my site will be up and running
