I have a Kato C44-9W that doesn't have a number and I want to put a proper # on it. Can anyone give me several appropriate numbers for this type of engine? I've been to the UPRR site and it lists numbers 9659 - 9834. (It also lists them as EMD's. Is this right? The one I have says, "GE.") Does anyone have a picture of one of these on a website? That would be helpful also.

    Thanks for any help.

Hey, I absolutly LOVE C44-9Ws. This locomotive is a GE built DC powered locomotive. As for UP, I am more of a BNSF person. I do know however that UP purchased C44-9Ws with numbers 9700-9739. For CNW repaints, I have a photo of #9694. The CNW repaints don't have a door window on the nose door, and have a grey anti-glare nose.

The UP versions were numbered 9700-9739. Not bad for a BNSF guy! If you want a real good chart that shows the breakdowns of all the merger engines, go to www.uphs.org and go to the index page and the first item will give you recent UP rosters for all locomotives. Hope this helps!

Great Info! Thanks guys. Now it's time to decal this engine. I'll check Kato's site just to be certain sure I don't duplicate one of Kato's numbered engines.

Being a custom painter, I HAVE to have reference photos for paint jobs. I have three pics of UP C44's that seem pretty interesting.

    1. First pic, loco #9777, has the "We will deliver" slogan on it and a gray anti glare panel that cover the whole top of the nose.
    2. Second loco, # 9700, this locomotive appears to have a speacail silver UP sheild plac on the side's of the nose as well as what looks like an anti glare panel (bad picture so I am not sure).
    3. The last locomotive, #9723 is a plain old UP C44 with NO anti glare panel.

Any way, hope these things help! FYI, microscale makes the UP "We will deliver" decal sheet, though I heard it was out of stock and production.

Another thing, you can put the UP wing logo on like I did. I used the decal for the UP passenger locomotives (i.e., E8's). The "wings" come curved so when placed on the nose of an E8, they will lay straight. To put them on a C44, you have to literally cut the wings of of the shield, then put the three decals back on the C44 nose straight.
Then you can also get the Microscale decal sheet made for the SD70M's and just use that...... [IMG]

    Good luck~

I put #9714 on the engine. I didn't have any pictures to go by, but I figured I'd be safe as long as I don't allow any nitpickers to look at it. [IMG] I had a Microscale decal set with the "We Will Deliver" slogan, but I don't want to use the slogans because I'm backdating to the late 1980's. I'm not sure when the #9714 was built, but I'm assuming about that time. (You may correct me. If it is the early 1990's I can live with it.)

I also got crazy today and removed the numbers from one of my Kato dynamic brake SD40-2 and renumbered it #3312 with the bigger numerals on the cab. I also enlarged the "UNION PACIFIC" on the side and placed the UP shield on the front. It didn't turn out too bad. I now have a SD40-2 that I can run with my SD40-2 snoots that looks more like the same era. I don't know why Kato didn't make a later version of the UP engines with the larger decals and the dynamic brakes. I suppose an expert would say that it wouldn't have been prototypically correct, but there are a lot of us out here that don't care that much about a few rivets. (Heck, I don't even think I know how to spell rivits. Where's the spell check on this board?) I'd send a picture of my work, but I'm still trying to figure out the process. (I know E-8 typed a lengthly explanation of how to do that, but I've yet to figure it out.)

I already typed too long...I've been "bumped" offline. [IMG]

A picture of the SD40-2 that I renumbered can be found at the bottom of the page on this website:

I doesn't have all the bells, ditch lights, hoses, rear view mirrors, etc., but I thought it was pretty cool anyway. [IMG]
