    Hello all:
I am new to the UP board so please bear with me.
Since I have gotten into model rr last yr, I have became more interested in the prototypes.
I really like the UP most of all.
I was writing to find out what ever happened to the 4010 Big Boy and the 3967 Challenger?
I have these in HO scale Rivarossi locomotives.
I have recently acquired the UP Yellow Passenger sets from Riv.--16 cars in all.
I run the 3967 as a pass. service, which I learned via a Pentrex video summation that this is protoypical of the 3967 in that it was the 1st steam excursion on May 17,1943, and re-created in May 1993 w/ 3965 which had "elephant ears" attached.
I run the 4010 as freight and occasionally passenger service.

Thank you everyone for the UP board.
Thanks everyone for any info, it is very helpful.

Feel free to ask any questions here, as most members of trainboard are very helpful.

In researching these two locomotives, I found that no UP locomotives with these numbers were spared from the scrapper's torch. It appears that there were eight Big Boys spared from scrapping for preservation, although all are on static display and non-operational. For information on the status and location of preserved UP Big Boys, go to the
Big Boy Information Page at steamlocomotive.com

There are only two surviving UP Challengers, 3977 and 3985. 3985 is a member of UP's Steam program and is operational, as you are probably aware. 3977 is on display in North Platte, NE. Here is a link to some UP Challenger Information

Although I don't have the specifics on scrapping dates and locations, I hope this basic information will point you in the right direction.

Darn those scrape people, didn't they know that they were tearing apart history and the lore of these massive locos? I hope they realise that what they've done in the past has probably hit them in some way, but can't change what has happened.

Jef, I have a Rivarossi HO Big Boy with the # 4008, it was built in October of 1941, later stored in late 1958 after accumulating 1,039,600 miles. It was retired in January of 1962 and later scrapped sometime in late 1962. You can of course ask Union Pacific at their site: http://srd.yahoo.com/goo/union+pacific/0/*http://www.uprr.com/

jaijef, Welcome to Trainboard. I see Kevin broght you up to date on the fate of those two UP engines. The point is, both of those engines DID exist, so your models are technically correct.
As far as the scrapping goes, UP didn't do so badly. Look at the New York Central. We poor NYCS fans have only photos to remember the gorgeous Hudsons and Niagaras from. The only two NYC mainline steamers left are Mohawks 3001 in Elkhart and 2933 in St. Louis. :(
