    Hi All,

I just finished the new 2001 renumbering plan for the T-2's that UP overhauled prior to buying the SD70M's.

Thanks to warnings about thier imminent demise, I've been shooting all the tunnel motors in black & gold I see. Today, on my way back from W. Wendover, NV, we stopped in Helper and got two of 'em on film (as well as the DRGW speeder you posted earlier).
Are the unrebuilt tunnel motors to be retired, or are all of them gonna get renumbered? The unrebuilts are looking pretty ragged these days.

    Bob,

According to the grapevine, the only units that will be renumbered to the 2XXX series are the ones that have been rebuilt and painted yellow, except one. DRGW 5342 has been rebuild, I think, but not repainted.

There are also five units that have been repainted and renumbered to the 8XXX series that will not be renumbered to the 2XXX series. Then we have DRGW 5400. It has been renumbered to UP 8593, but was it repainted?? It is also not due for the 2XXX renumber.

As of today, 16 May 2001, only one unit has been renumbered and that is UP 2883, ex UP 8572, ex UP 4037, ex DRGW 5346.

Now that you are totally confused :D, you know why I don't have the GP40's all listed.

As a side note, UP has been very active in retiring all the SD50's it accuired except the DRGW ones. There are only 17 of them and are easy to track. This is another story in its self.

Back to the T-2's. They are running them until they die. Anything major and they are gone. This also includes cooling system problems due to lack of parts. DRGW 5353 has been in the dead line for a long time waiting its fate. Got word that DRGW 5361 has a bad traction motor. Will wait and see.

We also have some people that work for UP out of Denver that read and post on this Forum, so if I made a mistake in any of the above, they will jump on me and make it right :D.

Hi all, my friend and I are planning a trip to Utah in Late August. If by any chance that the tunnel motors are out of that area or all retired at that time please post it. I would hate to make that trip for nothing, but if there's even one DRGW there, I'm going. Thanks for the help ya'll I apprciate it.

I keep track of all the Grande units in UT & CO. Just go to my Utah Rails site and click on Daily Trace. It is updated every day unless I am on a road trip :D. There are 4 units at Helper today. They run the Dirt Train six days a week using three T-2's.
