ouch! wonder what the crews reaction was! Well at least us modelers now have an excuse for a prototype when something derails like that.
Wow that was crazy!!! That tank car just keeps bobbing down the track with the weight of the rest of the train behind it...Thanks for sharing this  Mike
Oh my gosh!!! That was crazy! Is the crew o.k.? I always thought I was pretty safe in a locomotive during a tornado. We have our fair share of them here in Kentucky.
That is amazing video. Steve, I agree with you in hoping the crew was uninjured, because you guys don't have form-fitting seats with headrests to protect from rear-end collisions. Is that camera a permanent installation, i.e. part of the program to install cameras on all locomotives to provide evidence with accident investigations, etc.?
Hytec: the cameras are installed to protect railroads in law suits about crossing incidents. the microphone is mounted outside (for the horn to be really audible), hence why the rain is so loud.
I have heard on other groups that the video was from January 2009, along the UP's Harvard sub, northern Illinois.
Here is a link to another forum who are discussing the wreck. Trains.com - Trains Magazine - Online Community - Train vs. Tornado Here is a link to a train wreck and the camera is on the lead loco. Here is a new article about the tornado. WBBM 780 - Chicago's #1 source for local news, traffic and weather - *
Think that's scary, look up liveleak.com and look for the video of a couple light engines OUTRUNNING a tornado!! It's from June 7, 2008.
That's the one!! And I hope that crew with the UP RC-unit got out too!! Smart Engineer-"I'm gettin' the heck outta' here"!!!
I think the RC unit crew was in the rear engine. You can see them early on. I think the light power move stopped to pick up the UP crew to evac them.
Scary stuff! When that power plant or whatever exploded, that was a terrific boom! The tornado vid was cool too--was neat to see the car suddenly lift off, and then the rest of the train rear-end the loco!
