Disused Northwestern Pacific tunnel in Sonoma catches on fire, so they just dump & seal it up. Would make for an interesting (abandoned) trackside scene. Animation with dry ice, anyone?
oh my. i thought science now a days can help solve even the impossible. i guess this is one is part of the impossible which science cannot undo.
It doesn't sound like a bad solution to me. Bury the ends, cut off the air...it's like smothering a burning toaster with a blanket.
If it going to burn for several more days using just the air inside it's likely the supports will be a total loss so it's hard to say if the tunnel will get day-lighted when this is done or if they feel they can redo the timber work lost in the fire if/when they want to use the tunnel again.
