Does anyone know where I could get a list of train symbols and/or numbers used by The Milwaukee Road in the 1970's and/or 1980's, please? Any help would be great here.

    Thanks!

Yes. You should get a "CMStP&P 1977 Freight Train Manual". These manuals list every single train, even the switch job of the entire Milwaukee System.

I got mine from Dave Cramer of Madison, WI. He sells Railroad Paper Collectibles and his website is at:

    RAILROAD PAPER COLLECTIBLES

You can download the catalog an look for CMStP&P.

    JKD-

Milw only used numbers for trains in this time frame. There were some big changes made, during the 1970's. The first one came on December 1, 1974. When a new Train Designation System was issued. Another was released, in 1976. Thereafter, many other changes were made.

I have the 1974. And should have at least one later version. The latter, is likely buried in a box downstairs. Argh.

What area, or lines are of most interest?

    Thanks!

That (and a few other things in the catalog) are going to be quite helpful.

    Much appreciated!

    Boxcab,

I'm looking mostly for trains running in South Dakota as well as anything that was running Chicago and/or Milwaukee to Tacoma/Seattle (transcontinental). I'm going to try and get a copy of the manual that was recommended and see if that helps... but just knowing the "system" Milwaukee was using in the late 1970's or early 1980's would be helpful too since I'm protolancing a modern Milwaukee.

    Thanks!

Am fairly certain that I don't have any data for after the western Embargo.

I do also have ETT. But, problem there is that many train numbers were dropped. As schedules were erratic, often changed. Or they simply could not keep them according to CCOR. West of the Twin Cities, transcontinental line, and branches, many people use train numbers when referring to photos, etc. Which I believe is incorrect. Yes. The company used them for accounting purposes, etc. But operating, no. Even if briefly shown on the dispatchers sheet, all other references, any communications such as radio or train orders, were to an extra east or west. Most of what you saw, pre-1980, were all running simply as 'extras'.

Guess I'll need to head downstairs. Find the mountain of moved boxes, and dig through that mess. That will be a chore!

    Hi Ken
I would be interested in a list like these myself. I started with the Road in 1974 so that would be interesting!

    Rob-

For what area? Or the entire system? The 1974 booklet is 8&1/2" by 11" in format. About 1/4 inch thick.

I know I've a later version. Somewhere. So far, searching has been fruitless. Boxes have been moved and reshuffled too much. :(

    Hey Ken
The 1974 would be great. Any of the trains out of Chicago during 74 I would of had a part in making up at Bensenville. Pretty cool!!! Let me know.
