A former girlfriend asked me once why I had over 100 trains. I answered... "Because I'm not done yet?" It's interesting that she didn't ask why I have over 400 music CDs...
Well trains are like fine wines, you're supposed to rotate them 1/4 turn every 6-10 months to prevent residue... [ 27. July 2004, 02:04: Message edited by: nscale_lover ]
i have one loco, and 27 cars.... sad part is, that one loco wont pull them all up the 2% grade on my layout! i should have my second loco VERY soon though.... hehehe
Ouch! I'd forgotten all about this possibility! Thanks for the reminder. I'm going to check some of my older cars! Boxcab E50
I've got about 200 cars and today I bought locomotives 49 & 50: UP AC4400CWs. I give up, I have no control...
ok, here goes. i have MR issues back to feb 2002. i have spent countless hours on forums, mfg and supplier websites and at the lhs. saturday july 23, 2004 i broke down and did it. i purchased a 40' pd boxcar. yep a whopping $6.95 i have invested in my model railroad. when i got home i grabbed my jewelers visor and opened the jewel case. BAM! i could not believe the micro printing was so sharp. it was like the .12ct diamonds with 56 facets in my small gem collection. i don't know how they do it. my wife asked me how long i was going to stare at that toy with the stupid looking visor on my head. i have a whole new respect for (n/z) scale modelers that add/modify/create there own markings and detail parts. respectfully david oglesby
well, considering my layout is only 6 x 5 ft. and it's my first layout - I just didn't know if 166 cars is excessive
Mike: You just have to run some long trains at an N-trak meet. That will take care of 125 cars give or take a few.
Well, the Pennsy had over 183,000 freight cars in 1954. I'm doing N scale, so divide by 160.... Nope, still need more cars!
Uhh... the actual # of cars doesn't scale down, so it looks like you're stuck with all 183,000 cars </font>[/QUOTE]Hmmm, good point! And 5,000+ passenger cars... cool!
If you don't mind an HO scaler chiming in.....I have a bit over 200 cars, and still have 10 more to build (not including the Frisco pulpwood flats I need to kitbash from my Walthers GSC bulkhead flats). As for excess, that's why you have staging yards (or staging shelves or boxes, if you have a small layout). I try to run a 15-car train with 2 powered locomotives, the exception being my 19-car unit coal train. Imagine the size of trains you could have in N! The only time you shoud really worry about paring your collection down is if you want to stay era-specific, or if financial dire straits hit. Hopefully, only the former will ever be a problem for us.
I think the model railroad universe expands. Individual layouts operate like black holes. As more and more cars, locos, track are drawn in, the more massive they become, thus drawing even more material in. Eventually they become so massive that anything that gets drawn into them can never hope to escape. This Natural pheNomeNoN is a result of quaNtum mechaNics.
A phenomenon also seen with layouts in other scales. As for quantim mechanics, I was asleep during that lecture- besides, I don't own a Quantum, I drive a Dodge! (just kidding....... )
