Found a Key SP MT-1 for sale at an LHS from an estate sale. Mint condition without box. It is priced in the middle of what they usually go for on the auction sites and brass trains. These are runners, on par with the Kato GS series. I'm really thinking about dropping the cash. I have 3 already, but another wouldn't hurt would it.
If you can afford it, and like it, what's to think about. Buy it! (It's not my dime, after all - lol)
The first step is to admit you have a problem. Is it really true that no one has yet formed Espee Fans Anonymous? Does medical science consider it incurable? Now if having a Santa Fe fan tell you that doesn't cause you to get on the stick and buy it already, you obviously don't need it. So, you're welcome.
I don't have a problem.....my wife would argue to the contrary. I'll probably try and talk them down a bit since it doesn't have a box. Not that I'm concerned with resale. OK, maybe I do have a severe fondness for SP brass locos.
A severe fondness for brass locos is perfectly understandable. As a Santa Fe man, it's that other bit of specificity that makes me wonder if you might be more loco than your collection... As an Indian fan would say to a Harley fan, you can have all the hogs--or Golden Pigs--you want. You still can't beat a Chief!
Kodachrome? Trying to find a happy medium? Blessed be the peacemakers... Even those idiots in the ICC knew that SF and SP just don't mix (except on Tehachapi, of course). I guess they learned their lesson from that Penn Central disaster... Yeah, buy the MT-1. Better you than me! You know, this conversation would be much more fun for me if I could just find a stat that proved the 3700 Class were better engines, dang it...
Anyone else wondering why someone with the name "SPsteam" is even bothering to seek a second opinion? Go buy the loco and be sure to post here afterwards: http://www.trainboard.com/highball/index.php?threads/what-was-your-latest-purchase.61543/
SPsteam, Hi dude. If the loco is a good runner and the price is as good as you say, go ahead and purchase it, ASAP. You could always try to turn it for a profit. Better than that, keep it and let's see how long afterwards Athearn announces the release of an N scale version. How cool that would be. SP steam forever! Carl
BUY IT !!! Every time I second guess a purchase, the item disappears. I'll find another one several years later and pay a million times more for it. Buy it. NOW !!!
Carl, Talked with athearn folks at Amherst, their MTs won't be making it to N scale anytime soon. I'll probably be making my way to the LHS later in the week to snag the loco. These rarely show up anymore, something I shouldn't pass on.
I think it was "Blessed are the cheesemakers". Aha, what's so special about the cheesemakers? Well, I am modeling 1986ish on the Toltec Branch....and a Kodachrome fits the timeframe, adds a little variety amd MU's well with another SW1500
Don't buy it, you already have several and there's no box. Then tell me where it is and I'll let you know if not buying it was a good decision or not and I'll let you know how it runs. Bonus points if it is painted, you automatically win if it is painted in Daylight colors.
Humm? This is certainly an interesting read. Now what was the original question? Oh, I get it. If you can't live without it...well...buy it. Test track it, fondle it and if it's begging you to, "Take me home." You know what to do.
I'm telling you that you will regret buying this engine. Don't do it, don't even think about doing it. Walk away...no run...then tell me where it is.
JMauer1, If it were 1/2 daylight it would have been paid for already. This one is the 49er early with SP lines. I have a 1/2 daylight and two 49er late's with large southern pacific. It is a first run from '85
