Greetings I'm Vincent (Vince works too, everyone calls me that) and hail from Shalimar, Fl. I'm a fairly young (23) modeler that would like to learn quite a bit of stuff while I'm here. I model BN from 1977 to 1987. SP is my #2 favorite becuase it's what I grew up with as a kid (lest did I know, It was at the very end of it) I'm not really one for introductions, but I'm fairly active on the MRR mag forums, TRW, and DD...
Hi Packer, Welcome to the TrainBoard, Glad to have you on board. Don't worry about being 23, you have 50-60 years of modeling time available to you...have a blast!
Hi Vince, lots to do around here, we like fotos and videos , especally if you are just starting to build !
Welcome aboard, Vincent. Hmm I lived near Shalimar way back in 1966 while TDY at Eglin AFB, let's see, about 24 years before you were born. Boy, I'm getting old. :startled:
Thanks guys. Jim (fitz), Thanks for your service, bet shalimar was a totally different town back then. My father was stationed at Eglin from about 1996 until 2008. I wanted to join the Air Force, but my poor un-aided eye sight and a mental disorder made it impossible to join. Paperkite, I've never really built a layout, but I've been building locos for quite some time. A layout is still pretty far off.
Packer, I was not in the military. I was TDY as a civilian contractor with Lockheed, and we had an SR-71 there for the cold weather testing. Never could figure out why the USAF did cold weather testing in Florida. Unfortunately I have hardly any photos from back then but I'm sure the entire region has grown immensely.
Jim, USAF built the cold weather test facility at the Eglin R&DC when they closed down the cold weather test facility on top of Mt. Washington, NH. Possibly Eglin was chosen because in the late '40s or early '50s Florida was depressed economically and Eglin was already there. Also the weather on top of Mt. Washington, though some of the most severe in the CONUS, could not be controlled by the test conductors who got upset...imagine that. BTW, I also was in Eglin's cold weather hangar for a week in the early '80s when NASA was testing some systems we had built. We were sharing space with an F-4 being tested at 100% power in a -25C environment. Fortunately we were in an enclosed sound proof (nearly) test chamber. Vince, I hope you have, or have already had the opportunity to get a tour inside the envionmental test hangar. It was a fascinating place 30 years ago, and I'm sure even more exciting today.
