What is this large online shipping facility located in Thornton, CA between Stockton and Sacramento? How was it served? Local or through manifest? Anyone have ground level photos? http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?T=1&S=10&Z=10&X=3191&Y=21160&W=2&qs=%7cSACRAMENTO%7cCA%7c Thanks Brad
The topographic map dated 1978 shows it pretty prominately. The Aerial Photo form the 1993 shows a string of boxcars. Map: http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=11&Z=10&X=1595&Y=10580&W=2&qs=%7cSACRAMENTO%7cCA%7c
It's been there quite a while. How it was served depends on what year you are talking about. We had a local that served it out of Stockton when I hired out in 1979. That lasted till 1981 IIRC. Also that was during the summer months, otherwise it was served by trains going to Oroville. In the early 90's we served it with a local out of South Sacramento Yard. I don't know how it is served now. It has had quite a bit of excitement over the years. In 1974 a major derailment happened between it and the river. In the mid 90's a sun kink cause a wreck that took out part of the warehouse. By the way, they canned tomatoes there. Greg
Thornton, CA - just 10 minutes west of me. It is a pretty old town. Just a little further (20 miles) north, in Clarksburg, those tracks are overgrown and abandoned.
