Here's a loaded question for the group. I'm recently retired and an N-Scale
newbie. I've been spending a lot of time on the Web looking at model
railroading sites for model RR information. Information from beginning to
end and everything in between on planning, constructing, and operating a
layout. The NMRA site has a good repository of information of the type I'm
looking for. Is there anything better? So here's the question:

Where is the greatest single source of HO and N model railroading
    information on the Web?

(HO and N are specified only because those are the most popular scales. As
stated above, beginning to end - FAQ's, Glossaries, Planning, Layouts,
Construction Techniques, Trackage, Wiring, Scenery, Operation, Tips,
    Techniques, etc. etc.)

Okay, from one BC're to another. First, Pacific Scale Rail in Victoria is your best source on the Island. The best source in British Columbia is Pacific Scale Rail in New Westminister. Almost everyone that works there has had their N scale layout feature in one or more of the mags, almost all in MR by the way, as well as some how to books.

On the internet, in the long term, the forums are best as you can specific answers to specific questions. I post in three; this one, Atlas forum in N, and the layout design sig in the Yahoo groups (you can get to this through the NMRA site - Special Interest groups - go to the Layout Design Group and you will find a jump to that forum.

Many forum members post their layouts, items they have built, and well written tips and suggestions at their own web sites. They will list their sites often in posts. With some, I will bookmark them (put them in your favourites with IE) and refer to them when I get to that stage in my layout. Although I haven't gone there, Yahoo has one of the most active DCC forums.

I live in Deep Cove in North Vancouver, feel free to email me. My son works at Central Hobbies for about 5 hours a week, Central is your second best source for N scale goodies and questions in the lower mainland.

If you were at the Cameron Show in November, I was the guy in an army uniform with cadets, doing security there.

    Trainboard?? YES !!

    No fair, you peeked.... 8=)

Seriously, Gerry, I have learned more good N stuff from friends here than just about any place on the web. No one site on the Web has
every possible iota of HO/N knowledge available. You can also get useful info thru local hobby shops, model RR clubs, how-to-books, monthly RR magazines, etc.

I have been in N continuously since 1968
(albeit interrupted by a year in sunny
Viet Nam in 1969-1970), and do find the Web
very convenient since I am confined to a wheelchair -- the Web is my gateway to the model (and prototype) RR world out there.

In that regard I have a ton of websites bookmarked, so if you need specific info on a RR topic, and you cannot find the answer anywhere else, feel free to email me at

    dondia@gateway.net

and I can try to point you in the right direction.

To tell you the truth Gerry I'd have to say here is where the best information is. If you want to know general hobby tips then "The Inspection Pit" is the best place to ask questions, if it is for specific scale questions then you go to N scale. The beauty about trainboard is that there are always members willing to give good advice and offer a hand. Whenever I need information the first place I ask is here . I may be biased but I'm being totally honest with you. I also visit other sites for information but I usually find what i'm looking for right here.

Trainboard is a darn good source of info - even with it's N scale bias [IMG] but more importantly I have found trainboard a great source of inspiration :D

For me this seems to be the most 'all-around' place - there are modelers, railroaders and just plain railfans. And if you need more in depth details on some particular topic - in the unlikely event that we can't help - someone here will know who can. :D

    Welcome aboard, Gerry.

As mentioned in the above posts, this site would appear to fit the bill for generic questions. Specific questions will most probably be answered by members here as well, or you will be pointed in the direction of the answers you require.
Don Brown (dbn160) is a fount of information on N Scale!

Any way you look at it, TrainBoard is the friendliest site for your information needs. [IMG]

SOMEONE HAS TO BE! I'm glad it's US! Really, I think TrainBoard supports all scales equally, even that REALLY BIG 1:1 SCALE! [IMG]

One thing I like about trainboard is that so far no participants have been know it all loud mouths that dominate a forum and drive people away, unlike other forums I have participated in.

That's because we don't allow that to happen. All the Moderators here are Hand Picked, not just open to any Schmoe that comes along. I feel proud to be among the Moderators that have been picked. We have a fine group, and I'm not just talking about the Mods and Admins! [IMG]

Welcome to the friendly family here at the TrainBoard Gerry! Most of the over 1,500 members here are willing to help eachother in any way we can. I say most, because some know a lot about laying track, others wiring, others benchwork, others superdetailing rolling stock, but none of use claim to know it all. We are not embarrassed to admit it if we do not know an answer, and no one here laughs at us, nor ridicules us for our utter stupidity! :D
