Why does it say AT&SF on the side of the cab?
Were they the owners of Gulf and Inter-State Railway or Gulf Interstate Railroad?

And the number on the sand dome isn't "1".

I suspect that might not be the actual G&I #1 but a later locomotive? Or it could be that after the locomotive was dug up out of the sand and restored, it was painted for ATSF. The Santa Fe was involved from the beginning and eventually totally absorbed Gulf and Interstate. As is true today, the news media back then sometimes grabbed an image to illustrate an article that may not have been the real deal.

Sad, but too true. They probably figured that any old choo-choo picture would do. Accuracy is not part of their job and they are not a public service, as some try to present themselves. They are a for-profit, make those bucks business.

Could it have been "Train #1", irrespective of the engine (yes, the caption says Loco 1, but....)? Or, could the photo be of the MOW train, which was pulling the loco out of the muck? So many possibilities
