I have finalized where my empire will be built. A 7' by 11' unfinishished room. I have posted a picture on my website of the initial mainline. Question 1 - Placing turntable and service tracks inside of loop on right (east) side? Where should I place yard? http://www.minilur.com/trains.htm [ 04 June 2002, 00:30: Message edited by: Barry ]
Late 1960's NP in N scale. Cool!!! Is this freelance, or any particular part of the prototype? BoxcabE50 Modeling Milw & NP in the Northwest, late 1960's.
I nned to lay some track so I can run some trains - so at this point it is freelance. What I've thought about is building the wall benchwork, putting down this track, and then go section by section revamping more prototypical.
I would be looking a widening the throat of your loop on the right and putting the yard in there. You want a long run for a yard. You might want to consider a helix down under your top deck and use underneath you layout as a staging area. This would increase the operational interest of your layout. Also the track in your staging doesn't have to be Kato; many use cheaper Atlas since the track is designed to be out of sight so to speak.
No recommendation on where to put your yard but I might offer a suggestion about your initial mainline design. You will probably want to rethink your loop on the lower left of the layout. The way you have it layed out now will give you less than 1 foot of aisle space between it and the middle peninsula. Just a thought.
updated web page photo. Added roundhouse, turntable, car servicing building, wreaking track. Also changed mainline so that 24" is the narrowest aisle. Since this is unitrack, I will probably begin building benchwork and build track without adding industry sides, staging, and essentially leaving the east loop as is. At my current rate of progress this may take a few months. My main goal is to lay some track so I can start running trains. http://www.minilur.com/trains.htm
Barry, In the fall, I will be starting "Lonely Hearts Club Band - part two" to help motivate me and others build their layout. It also serves as show and tell. So save some of your work for this fall, post your goals, share them with us, then tell us how you did. Look forward to you joining us then!
