OK I have been pocking around in the forum and online and have not found too many pics of N-Scale Roundhouses. I'm looking for pics to get an idea of what I' want to do. So post your photos, list your info. I'm building the Walthers/Heljan Union City Roundhouse, the kit cames as a 6 stall roundhouse, but you can build any number of stalls from 1 to 48, 12 being a 1/4 circle, 24 = half circle, 36 = 3/4 circle & 48 would be full circle. so the kit of 6 stalls is 1/8 circle. I now have 6 kits to build with, and I have the Walthers/Heljan 120' Turntable, but any turntable should work as long as it is 12" or 160 scale feet forn the front of the roundhouse. So Next I'll be building a new location for the bigger roundhouse, I'll be posting update as I move forward withthis project.
Wow. It's going to be a big one. What size layout base footprint in order to have room for that many stalls?
36 Stall Roundhouse under Construction After touring the railroad, managemnet found a spot to start the new 36 Stall Roundhouse, it required that the main line be rerouted to free up the area, it will also require to have some fill brought in on one end to as the lot drops off on one end, the roundhouse will be 3/4 of a 520 foot circle (39") on the back wall with a 320 foot inner circle. Plans are calling for a new 130' turntable to be installed. Management has put some Surplus Equipment up for auction to help pay for the Roundhouse Construction. 1st Photo shows location for the new round house before track realinement, which is still underway. 2nd photo shows placement of the roundhouse using a 24 stall cardboard template and 12 stalls of round house base. You can see how I'll need to add about 4 inches to one side of the layout to make room for the roundhouse.
That's a terrific scene. I'm hoping to add at least one roundhouse and turntable to my plan, but not certain how much room is needed to pull it off.
That whole scene occupies about a 30" x 42" space (30" deep, 42" long). Though it's hard to tell from the photo, the roundhouse is built into a corner space that otherwise would be pretty much wasted. The turntable is 10" in diameter. I built a similar scene on a 4' N-Trak corner module, although without quite as big a roundhouse (this one is a pretty decent replica of the NKP roundhouse at Bellevue, which is still standing and now owned by the NS). It can be done effectively without a whole basement (one of the great advantages of N scale, IMHO!). John C.
Turn Tables Too As part of a round house, you got to have a turn table, I got the Walthers 120' turn table, but it was one I picked up at a train show and from what I can tell its' missing some parts that go in the center of it. So I'm thinking I need to find another turn table, or figure out som eway to made this one work. Well as luck would have it, I have been cleaning up in my office a bit and got all the old train mags, put into 2 boxes, I got MR 1986 & 1978 I picked up free from a friend that was getting rid of some mags, so I started looking thru 1987 as it was on top and right there in the February issue is what I need. On the cover is a turn table with only one track, and on a slight slope so its nnot even in a pit, but its how they made it work in the pivot that I'm going to use on my turn table, the stereo headphone plug.. see pics below scanned from the February 1987 Model Railroader.
Ewwww, Pete you photo brought back nerve-wracking and layout wrecking memories when I "moved" my Walthers 130' eighteen inches on the layout. One of the grandkids came over and asked if I got mad at the trains. Robert
