A sigh of relief on the ditch lights!

I've had one or two (I have EVERY UP and BNSF GEVO that FVM has made [except the UP pink ribbon, I don't want that on the layout] ) that actually sit too low - the pilot hangs up on some rail joints...

I had the same thing happen with a FVM CP GEVO. Took me a few times to figure out what was happening. Never the fuel tank, though...;)

Can't play with the little stuff ALL the time...

My annual pilgrimage to the Illinois Railway Museum.

I rode these cars for a year when commuting to downtown Chicago:

And there was steam as well:

And some old friends - LUGO by UP, and where better to store them?

All I can say is WOW !!! What progress !!!

I've been away since page 47 and that was in 2011.

Boy, that took a while of catch up reading.

The layout looks fantastic and so does your scratch building !

Jim, I recently found your layout thread and I'm impressed!!! I've been going back though the posts to catch up but still have several pages to read. Keep up the good work on the layout and continue with the photos, they are the most enjoyable part of this thread!

We had a very special event last week: A visit by the Michael McGratten Memorial Train.

Obviously folks were interested in the train:

It was our honor to be included in the train's travels through the US and Canada.

I wish I had the room to build this size of layout.

You are doing a marvelous job.

    Amazed in Big Bear Country.

Thanks jim, I found your layout as has a lot of other people. And decided to join this forum, and punch a hole or two in the basement walls. Not the size of your layout but having a lot of fun with the expanse. Thanks again for the inspiration.

    Hi Jim

So you got the N 4-8-4 FEF-3 Union Pacific #844 - Excursion version.

    How is it running?
I have seen one in Germany for sale 150.- Euro that would be a good price?

    Hi Eugen,

I wanted to throw my 2 pennies in on the price you saw -- That is about $167.00 dollars -- that's a very good price.

    Regards,
    Wolf

Eugen, I've had that since the first run. Runs beuatifully...

And that IS a good price. The loco was recently reissued, there may be some left somewhere...for The Sub, a must have. (I already have 3985 and intend to get the Athearn 4014 when it comes out).

    Hi Jim

Do you detailing the Fox Valley Locos by yourself?
I hate to drill the wholes for the fine grab’s and other details.

    Yes I do Eugen.

I actually enjoy the process, and it's gotten so I hardly ever break a drill bit. I buy the #80 bits 10 at a time...

My recipe for putting a FVM in service:

    Complete disassembly.
    Install parts.
Clean excess grease from trucks and driveline. (I've been using an ultrasonic cleaner of late)
    Lubricate very sparingly.
    Reassemble, testing at each stage.

So in the end I have to do it the same way!
    Thanks’ for the motivation!

I think it is worth, the Fox Valley are in the moment the best brand what you can buy.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. I have a lot of their products, and while most are just fine, there have also been lots of issues with them.

There is no top manufacturer, just certain ones that are marginally better than others.
