    Jim....

I dont think anyone raggin on ya for the clean factor of your layout...room...even the house. In fact I am sure there are more then a few of us a bit jealous.

I think what we are say is...

Ya need to buy an old locomotive...weather it. Get some old box cars...weather them. Maybe even an old caboose..weathered

Now...just put em on your layout once in a blue moon and take some pics !! Then put em in a shoebox in the bottom of the closet...maybe buried under some old work boots ! LOL !!

Sometimes ya just gotta let your hair down and be "Bad' now and then...:tb-wink:

Besides...it would make all us mere mortals feel better :tb-biggrin:

I use natural weathering, and as the cars run n the rails and sit in the yards. After a while they have a fine layer of dust .........

    Nice shots as always Jim!

And there is a train of tank cars (including ethanol tankers), but with about seven or eight covered hoppers leading - if you look carefully over the last couple months you'll find it...One of these days I'll get more...I don't believe the tank train (oil cans) runs anymore...
    [/QUOTE]

Jim, I work and live in the Inland Empire of Southern California and I see a rather large tank train rolling through Cajon from time to time. They are likely ethonal but either way the train is impressive. Its quite distracting driving truck through the freeway construction while attempting to enjoy a tank train rolling into the San Bernardino yard.

Looks great as always... Good to see the second gen power. The problem with weathering, is that it's all or nothing. It looks weird to just do a few. And I don't think I could bring myself to weather that many. But I know a lot of people would.

That indeed would be a problem for Jim. He's got a lot of cars to weather if he ever changed his mind and decided to go in that direction. It would be a monumental task. On the other hand, he build a large, finished, beautiful layout in about three years. He could get it done if he wanted, but he obviously doesn't and that cool as its a great layout as is. Just close your eyes once, though, and imagine how it would look with a fleet of properly weathered rolling stock. It would be awesome!

Daryl as always makes good points. There are around a thousand cars on the Sub - that staging yard is like a sponge!

I thank you all for the points you bring to the discussion. (David - I keep a soft brush handy, and every time a loco or car comes to the workbench it gets dusted.)

Maybe after the warbonnets are all gone from the prototype - I really can't bring myself to desecrate that paint scheme, even though I've seen the same grunge photos of the prototype you all have.
    Heritage I OTOH...

    Jim,

Do not let these weatherizers get to you. Your layout is youe empire, and you make your own rules. And who is to say that in some alternate reality, there was the same railroad with a world that had no graphiti and rail roads were so proud of thier fleet thay always kept them looking like new.

String theroy postulates an infinite number of realities, just say you are modeling in reality number 3899123.

Silliness aside, weathering your cars and locomotives will not change the beauty and the awesomeness of your layout. If you do that, then you may as well have scorch marks from the wild fires and litter all over the place. And that wouldn't look so nice.

Besides, there is a better way, just put a lot of dust and dirt on the camera lens!:tb-biggrin:

That way they will all have the same level of weathering:tb-biggrin:

    I agree wholeheartedly !!

I wouldnt dare weather any or all them locos and cars...not on a bet ! That's why I suggested just ONE (1) slightly dirty train ! In the real world...you seldom see new, clean anything on the rails. Anything that has run even a few hundred or thousand miles...has some sort of dust, dirt, grime, grafitti, wear and tear on it. IMHO that should be modeled too...even if only on a very limited basis of ONE (1). He models modern trains and that's kewl....but new trains get dirty too :tb-tongue:

Jims layout is what everyone strives to achieve. I find myself thinking of his layout while working on mine.

Like I said Jim...throw us a (1) slightly dirty bone once in awhile...something for us mere mortals to relate to...LOL.

This is the nicest layout on Trainboard. I like the no weathering. Some people model real-world some people model a stylized-world, a world as they see it, or as they wished it was. I like the stylized layouts.

Here's the solution though. A Trainboard member who's a kick-a$$ weatherer and who lives near Jim, needs to head over there with a box full of grimy trains to run for an afternoon. Click, click goes the camera. We all get to see it. And someone has the honor of seeing his trains run on the great New Oakville Sub.

    Win Win Win

Aw, Dan, you're making me blush...but I thank you for the kind words!

That IS a great idea, though. Unfortunately, John, I know of no one in the vicinity that meets the description - there is a fella that's gonna move here, but he's got a house to sell and is gonna be a busy bee for a while after he does....

I have had - and welcome - visitors. If you find yourself in the Nashville area, I'm about a half hour south near I65 and would be happy to see you....

And let's not forget Jerry DeBene's (OC Engineer JD) abuilding layout. It's a stunner! (I need to have an excuse to visit Gadsden...)

Thank you all, it's very humbling. (Blush, blush) :)

Long as it's DCC, there's room in the Oakville Yard and plenty of memory in the camera...

Only problem as I see it is ya can't get here from there - or vice versa! At least not directly, durn it!

And yeah, dirty would be nice... :)

    I can't believe I said that!

Nice... Jim, have you ever listened to the Lancaster radio stream?

    RailroadRadio.net - Lancaster, Ca

It covers your whole territory. You can listen to the guys out there working all the way from Acton to Bakersfield, and Trona to Boron... Including up and over the hill. I listen sometimes at night... It's cool hearing the guys running out there in some of those desolate areas late at night, and picturing the locations. Normally the rock train is out there each night going from Mojave to Sun Valley.

Thanks for the link, Dave. I live in the IE and will take a listen to my area.

    Nice pic Jim, Thanks.

Thanks, Dave. Might have it running in the trainroom, add a touch of authenticity...

John, I did that not all that long ago over maybe six weeks, four shots per week. Granted, SOME areas have changed since then, but aside from the crossovers, not all that much. Look back around November/December...Unless you had something else in mind?
