Thanks, Guys! Gary, What I mainly heard was "Can they go faster?" and the odd request of the evening "Do they go backwards?" I'd give 'em a throttle, all right - then turn the radio off! I'll trust Bill, no sweat - and if it was just ONE kid, maybe. But with a gang like that... The parents were quite interested and asked some good questions though. I think layout height at that point is around sixty inches. If you'll go back to that shot of Bill Hebb from last week, my height is 5'9"...there is a slight upgrade all the way from staging to Oakville - maybe a half per cent, not enough to cause any issues. You'd have to talk to FVM about that scheme - tells you the GEVOs have been around longer than we think...I believe they have swooshes coming out in June...
And at Oakville, another week, another ten feet (or so) of mountain. The first shot shows the basic supports in place: Then we have the completed web with masking tape (a la Joe Fugate) in place: First coat of joint compound is now on - you'll note trains continue running during terraforming... And a shot from the other direction:
Looking good Jim!!! I guess you had plenty of time to work on trains since we were stuck in the house with snow and ice huh?
Snow? Ice? Single digits? Hey, Thom, it's January and I'm still used to Chicago. OTOH, I'm also retired and didn't leave the house except to get the mail....oddly tho, didn't spend any more time than usual on the Sub...
Thats alotta mountains! Which means alotta tape! Looks great, can't wait to see how it blends in with the background as seamlessly as the rest of your layout does.
Thanks, everyone! That's actually the last of the MAJOR mountains to be done - what's left now is the rail-fascia area - which will get tricky by the staging yard panel. And alotta mountains mean alotta trees - my fingers are sore already just thinking about it! Since the backgrounds in this area show many more trees than elsewhere on the layout, I plan to use puffball tufts. I've got the raw material, just need to motivate myself to make them.
Those are some HUGE mountains. Looking good. Glad I am not the only one who runs trains right through the construction sites. Jamie
Thanks, guys! I must admit to getting tired of doing mountain scenery, but the end is approaching! I run the trains simply to keep my sanity. I'm aching to begin detailing, but need to keep first things first. I HAVE snuck in a few other things - all my locos are now on the layout, first time in three years. and I'm working at getting more representative trains built. And of course I do need to keep up with current loco trends - what with SD40-2s going into museums and older locos being put in a LUGO line. (Hey, I needed an excuse to get the gorgeous GEVOs from FVM!)
After looking through the entire thread I am completely blown away at your layout. I absolutely love the "railfan" aspect of the layout. It makes it so much more enjoyable with the size you are able to allocate to the railroad! Oh, and of course let us know your "review" of the GEVO's from FVM!!! Great Work!
Gentlemen, the GEVO picture has been up for some time now - here it is again: As to a review: I LIKE 'em! They run as smoothly as Katos (my pair, anyway) and have more detail than the other manufacturers. And throwing in sunshades, wipers, and grabs (painted no less) for those of us crazy enough to add them - PRICELESS! (But they forgot the MU cable...I didn't.) And the pluggable DCC connection is GREAT! I believe FVM will become a MAJOR force in the scale, and plan to add more as they become available.
In case nobody's told you... YOU DO AMAZING WORK!!:tb-biggrin::tb-biggrin::thumbs_up: I've thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread. Cheers!!
