After assembling more LEGOs, I painted them SP lark gray and silver and set them in place. Also got the chip loading tubes made and painted.
The A/C unit on the office roof is a Burt Industries or Cal Freight detail.

I have a few more details to add to the building and then I can move on to some of the other industries in Malvern, most of which are just stock kits. Once I get them assembled, I can start on the greenery!

    More on the blog.

I wonder how much this would have cost as a kit? You've probably saved a good amount of money. I am curious as to how much money do you think you have in this build? Perhaps under twenty dollars?

    Ha! Not even close. :(
The last figure I had was closing in on $80

    4 sheets of styrene [including shipping] @ $6.33 each - $25.32
    Glue 3.97
The original batch of LEGOs was $10
    Additional batch was $8
Windows and doors was close $30
    Two cans of spray paint @ $4.25 - $8.50
The loading shed - $10 [ebay]

    This is closer to $96.00

Now, I didn't use everything I had, I had leftovers which I will be able to use on the next project. That will cut down the price some. I also had some stuff in stock that I used for the trim

My guess I it cost me close to $45 - $60 easily. Even after you take off the cost of the one sheet of styrene, $6 for paint, $15 for the windows and doors I didn't use and even the cost of the LEGOs.

It wasn't as cheap as I thought it would be but the only way you can look at it is I have stuff left over for the next project and it's unique which filled the space I had, where if I would have used a stock kit or kitbashed a couple it might have been more.

The Walthers Cornerstone Superior Paper Mill is around $70, I had a thought of using two of these kits at one time.

Wow. Didn't picture in mind that much invested. But the end result is well worth while.

Yeah, I was thinking in the neighborhood of $30-$40 when I was first laying things out.
But hopefully I can reuse a lot of the parts on the next one which should drive the price down.

Had I of used two of the Superior Paper kits, I would have been looking at least $140 to start with, but I would have had quit a bit left over like the the two steel buildings. Take those out of the equation and I still would have been in the $70 range I suppose.

But like you said, I'm happy with the end result and of course the knowledge accrued with this build.

    Happy New Year!
Hope yours is going well so far?

After getting the Crushmoore building to a stopping point I took a bit a breather and got some other things done that was piling up on the bench.

One thing lead to another and before long I was finding myself back to weathering some rolling stock again. While I was doing that I seen where KATO announced their upcoming F2's, one of which will be a pair of Rock Island A units and I've always been a sucker for their Red and Black scheme.
This in turn caused and old itch to resurface; wanting to install chips in my LifeLike FA/B1's. I wound up purchasing a couple of Aztec pre-milled frames for these units. After a couple of DZ125's arrived over the holidays and a few hours later, I now have two of my six FA's DCC'ed. With this hurdle behind me, and placing an order for a pair of the Rock Island F2's I think I should have enough older power to be able to back date the motive power from time to time for something different.

With most of these little projects finished, I decided to get back to the buildings in Malvern.
Friday while surfing the web in Bing Maps looking for ideas, I stumbled across one of Olin-Chlor's plants in Charleston, TN and it gave me what I needed for the Olin-Chlor plant in Malvern.

The big square building looked like something that might fit in the space that I have, but much condensed of course.

I zeroed in on the left end of the building.
    After I finished up some drawers for a customer this afternoon, I sharpened my pencil and turned my thoughts towards the new building. I figured I could use the same method for this building as I did for the Crushmoore building. I dug through my scrap barrels again and came up with this;

    The tall section is 9"w x 3.75"t x 2.25"d. The lower section is 7"w x 2.5"t x 4"d.
1/2" plywood sides and 1/4" ply for the top.

Pre-March of 1980, was this plant served by any other railroad? Or did the RI have the customer all to themselves?

Which plant are you referring to BC?
The actual plant or the plant I'm representing on the layout?

The actual pictured plant is near Charleston, TN, no where near AR.
The plant that I'm trying to model was probably never there. I'm basically free lancing the prototype cause I like tank cars! :)

Ah. OK. I was thinking you were trying to represent a plant which actually existed in Malvern.

Nope, I didn't go to that length.
Sometimes I wish I would have, but I didn't have much info on the location when I started.
That article I got from you does have quite a few clues as to what was on the line. So I might change some of the names or even the some of the industries if I can. But I'm not too worried about that.

If I can get trains rolling and enjoy the layout, then I'm happy. Most of the guys in our group have a hard time trying to figure out the differences between the types of boxcars, let alone anything else. LOL!
It passes the time and that's what maters to me.

The car forwarding system that I use is all based on car types.
I figured trying to the read the numbers would get harder every year, at least we could always see the actual cars.
That was until I realized that not everyone, including me at times, know the differences between them, meaning the specific uses.
The first session where a couple of the guys who aren't familiar with them decided to take a crack at working the yard at El Dorado.
We had reefers going to the lumber yard, all door boxcars at the Chicken processing plant and plug door boxes going to the recyclers!
Ha d a good laugh once we figured out was going on!

I'm glad I model a short line with no boxcars. Now if I could get everyone to figure out the different covered hoppers... wheat, sand, flour... life would be a lot easier.
